As Kazusa leaned back into the seat in relief, a sharp tingling ran through his left middle finger, causing his shoulder to flinch.

“...!”

Looking down, he noticed that Zero’s right middle finger had touched his own. It was such a faint touch, fleeting with the car’s vibration, that he couldn’t be sure if it was intentional.

(Wait? Was that on purpose?)

He looked up, but Zero was staring straight ahead. His poker-faced profile gave away nothing of his thoughts.

Was it intentional? Was it an accident? Unable to decide, Kazusa felt his heartbeat quicken.

His face was hot, and his body felt warm. If this continued… it wouldn’t end well.

Just as he nervously tried to pull his hand back, the taxi stopped. Zero calmly paid the fare as if nothing had happened, and the three of them got out.

Kazusa looked up at the building silhouetted against the pre-dawn sky, its windows gleaming with light. A nostalgic feeling welled up in his chest.

(I’m home—back where I belong.)

This place was now his home, too. Facing the seven-story building, he felt it deeply.

The soft click of the taxi door seemed to alert someone; the black door on the first floor opened with a quiet hum, and the residents who had been waiting, apparently without sleep, rushed out in small groups.

“Owner!”

“Hawk!”

“Lemur!”

“You’re back!”

In no time, they were surrounded. There was Serval, Giraffe, Zebra, Fossa, Jackal, Newt, Leopard, and Lynx—all here, even Misa, who was sleeping in Gazelle’s arms.

“Thank goodness!”

“Ahh, I’m so glad!”

“I was so worried about what would happen if you didn’t come back!”

The residents, their eyes red and faces scrunched up as they tried to hide their tears, voiced their relief one after another. Zero told them, “Sorry for worrying you.”

He looked into each person’s face, gently patting their shoulders or backs, reassuring them with his steady, comforting voice, “It’s all fine now.” Watching him ease everyone’s anxiety and stress, Kazusa couldn’t help but admire Zero’s leadership.

It wasn’t because he was an Alpha or a member of the Shutou family. Without relying on any social advantage, Zero had slowly and diligently built up something—trust.

There was no substitute for Zero.

Just as ‘RARE’ was Zero’s one-and-only place, Zero was an irreplaceable presence for the residents of ‘RARE’.

As Kazusa reflected on this, Serval tapped him on the shoulder. Turning to look, he saw Serval grinning broadly with a thumbs-up.

“Good job, Sensei!”

“Serval…”

“I knew you’d bring back the Owner and Hawk!”

Serval hugged him, and Kazusa hugged his younger friend tightly in return.

“It must have been tough, right?”

“No… Waiting must have been tough too.”

Knowing Serval, he had probably kept everyone’s spirits up, using his natural cheerfulness to reassure those who were anxious and uneasy.

They gave each other a light pat on the back, exchanging words of appreciation: “Good work,” and “Same to you.”

“Oh, she’s awake.”

Gazelle’s voice caught his attention. He looked over to see Misa, who was in Gazelle’s arms, rubbing her eyes with tiny hands. Her long lashes fluttered as she drowsily asked, “...What’s going on?”

“Nothing,” Zero gently whispered as he stroked her head.

“No matter what happens, I’ll protect you… so sleep well.”

Misa, reassured, closed her eyes again—the peaceful scene bathed in a warm crimson glow from the rising sun in the eastern sky.

The long night, dominated by fear, had ended, and a new morning had begun.

Relieved by the leader's return, the residents began heading back to their rooms, saying, “Great job,” and “Good night.” Among them, Zero called out, “Kazusa, I need to talk to you.”

“Talk… with me?”

“Yes, could you come to my room?”

Just hearing it was Zero’s room brought back memories of last night’s heat in an instinctive flash. Only a few hours ago, they had held each other like wild animals in that very room. Going back there felt a bit awkward.

As he hesitated, Zero looked at him with a serious expression and pleaded, “Please.”

With a look like that, he couldn’t refuse.

“...Alright.”

They entered the elevator together, and Kazusa consciously kept some distance from Zero, moving toward the corner. Remembering what had happened last night also reminded him of the unspoken boundaries between them.

(What could he want to talk about?)

As his mind swirled with thoughts, they arrived on the seventh floor. Zero stood in front of Room 701, opened the door, and gestured for Kazusa to enter.

“Pardon my intrusion,” Kazusa mumbled softly as he stepped inside.

The door clicked shut behind him, and then—suddenly, he was embraced from behind, a shiver running up his spine.

The shock felt like an electric jolt, and a gasp escaped his lips. Just as he felt himself relax, the hold was released, and before he could regain his bearings, Zero spun him around, gripping his upper arms. Kazusa’s mouth opened and closed as he faced Zero.

“Wh-what is…?”

“I’ve figured out why this happens.”

“What?”

“This electricity.”

Zero tightened his grip on Kazusa’s arms, intensifying the tingling sensation. Another small gasp slipped from Kazusa’s mouth.

“Sorry… I’m just so excited.”

Zero released him abruptly, though his face was still flushed with lingering excitement.

“We’re ‘soulmates’.”

“‘Soulmates’?”

Surprised by the sudden declaration, Kazusa questioned him with a hint of suspicion.

“This electricity… My brother taught me that it’s part of a phenomenon called ‘resonance heat,’ which only occurs between ‘soulmates’.”

“Keiki told you that?”

“Yes.”

“Resonance heat…”

Kazusa repeated the unfamiliar term, still not fully grasping its meaning.

“I left the Shutou family when I was twenty-two, but even before that, I’d grown weary of the dominance games and gossip among Alphas and distanced myself from that society. For the past seven years, living in a separate world, I’ve had no exposure to information about Alphas. However, my brother, the current head of the Shutou family and a man with connections in Alpha society, is well-versed in all kinds of knowledge. I thought he might know something about this phenomenon, so I asked him.”

As Zero explained, Kazusa remembered the moment Zero had stopped Keiki in the meeting room at the D-East Station to speak privately.

(So that was what they discussed?)

“My brother says that when ‘soulmates’ come into contact, their two souls and bodies resonate intensely, entering a state of powerful heat—resonance heat—that’s potent enough to override natural instincts. The electricity is the trigger. In other words, we were drawn together by fate, and from the moment we met, we’ve felt a powerful attraction—we’re ‘soulmates’.”

Zero spoke with passion, his voice full of conviction. Even with that much explanation, Kazusa still found it hard to believe.
