Two weeks had passed.

―――Special treatment isn’t good for the peace here. I won’t come to your room anymore. So please, don’t wait outside mine either.

―――I understand. From now on, I won’t come near you.

Since that exchange in the middle of the night, any personal contact between Zero and Kazusa had vanished completely.

He was no longer invited to Zero's room. Zero no longer waited in front of his room. There was no special treatment anymore.

Even when Kazusa attended the pre-opening meeting in the lounge as one of the cast members, he never made eye contact with the owner standing at the front. And if by chance their eyes did meet, Zero would quickly look away.

Kazusa also consciously avoided any contact with Zero. At meetings where he had no choice but to face him, Kazusa stood at the far end of the line, taking care to avoid eye contact as much as possible.

Additionally, where he had been calling him ‘Zero’ since their first encounter, he now referred to him as ‘the owner’, aligning with the other residents.

Thanks to these mutual efforts, within two weeks, their relationship had been corrected to the proper form of owner and employee. There was no more imbalance.

Yet, even though things had returned to their rightful state, Kazusa's heart was far from clear and bright.

Now, during the meetings –– the only time in the day when Kazusa could secretly look forward to seeing Zero's face –– if Zero acted as if Kazusa didn't exist, giving him the cold shoulder, Kazusa couldn't help but feel unbearably lonely, despite having asked for it.

No matter how much he told himself, "Things have returned to how they should be," the sense of loss was never filled.

Kazusa felt that Zero hated him.

If only he hadn't declared it so abruptly like that.

Even though Zero had saved his life, given him a place to stay, and shown him so much mercy, Kazusa had grown arrogant and dared to express his opinion. And worse, he rejected him...

What an idiot. Of course Zero hates him now.

Kazusa wanted to apologise. He wanted to go to Zero's room, kneel down, and take back what he had said.

He had thought that more than once or twice. At least three times a day, he was overcome by that urge.

Each time, Kazusa suppressed the turmoil in his heart by gritting his teeth.

Because as the days passed, the effect of putting distance between him and Zero started to show, and the harassment from the slum gang had begun to settle down. While the glares and irritated clicks of the tongue as they passed by still continued, the trouble of having his locker opened without permission or being directly assaulted had stopped. It might have been because he had added a secondary lock to his locker or because he made sure not to be alone by inviting someone with him when going to the back area.

For now, the crisis of worsening relations between Zero and the cast had been averted.

Compared to that, his own feelings were insignificant.

In the meantime, despite the emotional damage, the bruising on his side from the encounter with the Lycaon had healed, and his left knee had fully recovered.

He had also gradually grown accustomed to his duties as a cast member, becoming less awkward and managing the role of supporting the main cast without many problems.

Kazusa also felt that he was slowly getting used to the other cast members besides Serval. Though there was a ten-year age gap with the youngest cast member, once he got a sense of their personalities, the workflow became smoother.

Serval acted as a bridge, and thanks to spending time together at the gym, going shopping, and making snacks or sweets in the kitchen, their private interactions had increased.

Though they were all unique and not easy to deal with, Kazusa found himself growing fond of them with their quirks and all. He wished he could also close the distance with Lycaon and the others, but that seemed like asking for too much. He decided to take things slowly.

And so, after spending those two weeks with a lingering sense of loneliness in his heart, Kazusa had started to fit in both personally and professionally with life at ‘RARE’.

One afternoon, the setting was the community floor on the first level. Kazusa, Leopard, Zebra, and Serval sat around a large central table. At the counter facing the courtyard sat Hawk, Giraffe, Lynx, and Newt.

Kazusa and Hawk were about to start a study session as the teachers.

The trigger for this was a conversation with Giraffe and Zebra, who had been on the same shift the other day. Excluding Misa, they were the only women, so they got along like sisters.

"Hey, wasn't Lemur a doctor?" Giraffe, with her twin buns and slanted bangs, had asked during the break between the first and second parts. "Oh, yeah, I was," Kazusa had answered.

"So, that means you're smart, right?"

Zebra, with her signature black bob haircut and silver highlights, pressed the question with innocent curiosity, making Kazusa chuckle awkwardly.

"I don't know about that. Well, I did study hard to become a doctor."

"Then, can you teach us?"

Zebra asked with an eager expression.

"Do you want to study?"

"Yeah, I want to be a pâtissier. And my dream is to open my own shop."

Now that she mentioned it, Zebra often made sweets in the kitchen on the first floor. Kazusa had received some of them before. They were all delicious.

"That's why I want to go to a pastry school. And if I’m going to run a shop, I need to be good with numbers, right?"

"I see."

"I want to be a model who can work internationally."

That comment came from Giraffe. Standing over 175 cm tall, with a small face and long limbs, she certainly had the qualities to be a model.

"So I want to study foreign languages. I feel awkward asking the owner since he's so busy..."

Kazusa understood why Giraffe might feel hesitant.

Zero was not only the lounge's owner but also an investor. In fact, his work as an investor could be considered his primary occupation. The lounge's profits were shared among the cast members, while the operational costs of ‘RARE’ were covered by the earnings from Zero's investments.

Beyond those financial activities, he was also involved in charity work in partnership with non-profit organisations. Lately, he had been focusing on supporting and rescuing Stray Omega children. Like Misa, these children, who had no known father, were often born and raised in brothels without any education. When they reached their heat cycle, they would inevitably follow the same path as their mothers, perpetuating the cycle of exploitation.

Every day, Zero, with the help of Hawk, tirelessly worked to save as many of these children as possible.

"I’ve been studying on my own, watching videos, but I've hit a bit of a plateau."
