“Alright, then, Sensei, let’s sit here so we don’t get in the way,” Honjou said, pulling out a chair a reasonable distance from the three brothers. Kazusa sat next to him, whispering, “Thank you.”
“I’m not doing it for you. Watching the Shutou brothers face off sounds interesting. You don’t get to see such a rare show every day,” Honjou joked. Still, he’d probably stayed because he figured it would be uncomfortable for Kazusa to be the only outsider left. Though rough around the edges, Honjou was a considerate person.
Looking at the three brothers from a little distance, Kazusa noticed that none of them had taken a seat. Keiki and Kariya stood shoulder-to-shoulder, with Zero standing across from them, forming a triangle.
With three Alphas gathered, the plain conference room seemed like a stage. The area around them alone seemed to glow, as if they were under spotlights on a platform.
Tall, with nine-head proportions. Refined features. Superior physical strength. Exceptional intelligence. Abundant wealth. And strong reproductive potential.
A category destined from birth to stand above others—the Alphas.
And among them, the Shutou family was one of the top five super-elites. The top of the top Alphas.
(They’re people who live in a completely different world…)
Kazusa felt acutely aware that they belonged to an entirely different class.
As he mulled over his unrequited first love, which had ended before it even began, Zero started to speak.
“First, I’d like to thank you both. —Keiki-nii, I apologise for making you come here so late at night.”
“I figured you could handle a situation like this on your own, but I didn’t want to miss the chance to see you after seven years,” his older brother said, revealing his desire to reconnect, which made Zero’s expression turn complicated.
“You probably didn’t want the Shutou name involved, though.”
“I did try to find a way to resolve it without using the name… but any further delays could have extended the detention period, and, in the worst case, might have led to a formal indictment and trial. Even if I won in court, creating friction with the local police could negatively affect the future management of ‘RARE’.”
Zero’s words, carefully chosen, showed he hadn’t just spent time idly in detention but had considered various possibilities and searched for the best option.
“The Shutou name proved effective on the Alpha Inukai—and on the deputy chief, a pawn of the powerful. In hindsight, I believe the way things were resolved was for the best.”
Zero concluded, then turned his gaze to his younger brother.
“Kouki, the reason I was released early is thanks to you reaching out to people on my behalf.”
“Well, that’s what brothers are for, isn’t it? I was actually a bit hurt that you didn’t rely on me earlier,” Kariya replied with a slightly pouting expression, making Zero’s eyes soften.
“My last memory of you was from when you were still in high school, but you’ve become a fully-fledged member of society now. After leaving home, I deliberately shut myself off from news about the Shutou family, so I didn’t even know you had become a detective. I was pretty shocked when we ran into each other in the hallway… But now that I think of it, you used to say you wanted to be a police officer, inspired by the detective who saved you from that kidnapping incident.”
Kariya’s face flushed with embarrassment.
“You remembered that?”
“Yeah. There were times I tried to forget, but… I couldn’t. So, you made your dream come true. Congratulations.”
“Thank you. My parents were adamantly against it, but Keiki-nii convinced them… Though as a result, he ended up bearing the entire burden of the Shutou family alone,” Kariya said, looking apologetically at Keiki, who stood nearby. Zero also turned his gaze to his older brother.
“As for that… I share responsibility,” Zero murmured.
“Reiki…” Keiki responded.
“I dumped everything on you and Kouki and ran away from that house. I thought I could never face you two again…”
Hearing Zero’s remorseful confession, Keiki shook his head.
“No… I’m the one who should apologise.”
“Keiki-nii?” Zero asked.
“The Shutou family is obsessed with Alpha supremacy. Our mother, an Alpha, treated you harshly because you were a child from a side relationship, and our father, who clung to the purity of Alphas while indulging in an Omega woman and having a child with her, looked the other way out of guilt. Outwardly, the family appeared to be a flawless Alpha household, but I knew there was a deep fracture within. I spoke with Mother about it several times, but every time, she would lose her temper, crying, ‘Are you betraying me?’ As you grew up, Mother’s mental state became increasingly fragile, and I had to give up trying to convince her, fearing she might completely break down… In the end, that decision ended up cornering you. I would run away, too,” Keiki explained.
Listening to Keiki’s account of the Shutou family’s inner struggles, Honjou muttered under his breath, “That’s pretty messed up.”
Kazusa had already known about Zero’s complicated upbringing, but now that he understood it was within the elite world of Alphas, he felt the full weight of Zero’s emotional burden.
“Our mother feared that Reiki-nii would surpass us, the sons she bore, in achievement. If that happened, she wouldn’t be able to maintain her pride as an Alpha,” Kariya added, to which Keiki nodded in agreement.
“When you left, I was uncertain whether I should search for you. Before I could make a decision, the tabloids caught wind of it, and Mother, terrified of a scandal, ordered me to find you. But I deliberately chose not to. At the time, I felt the only thing I could do as your brother was to let you break free from the chains of the Shutou family.”
“Keiki-nii…”
“But that’s different now. Seven years have passed, and I am now the head of the Shutou family. —Reiki,” Keiki called out, shifting to a formal tone.
“Would you come back? I’d like you to be my right hand man.”
It must have been an unexpected offer. Zero looked at his brother with a hint of surprise, then slowly shook his head.
“I never had a place in the Shutou household or in the Alpha social scene where I was born and raised. Even the foreign country I fled to wasn’t the ‘place’ I was searching for. In the end, I ran from there too and drifted to Deep Downtown. I started living there, motivated by the hope that I’d have as little contact with Alphas as possible. It was there, in that place, that I unexpectedly found what I want to dedicate my life to.”
Zero paused and looked at Kazusa. With his gaze, sharp as a gemstone, fixed directly on him, Kazusa’s heart skipped a beat.
