Kazusa watched his retreating figure in stunned silence.
He’d upset Zero, who had only been trying to protect him.
In truth, he didn’t like it. He hadn’t liked Inukai grabbing his hand or kissing the back of it.
But as a novice host, he couldn’t simply shake off a steady client’s advances.
Navigating client relationships was part of a host’s skillset. He’d learned that from the more experienced hosts.
Even the younger hosts, ten years his junior, skillfully created a romantic atmosphere, giving clients a moment of fantasy.
Then he should be able to do it, too. No, he had to.
Because he believed that doing so would protect Zero’s precious place.
Through his tear-blurred vision, the neon lights of Deep Downtown appeared hazy. Kazusa removed his glasses, wiped away a beastly tear with the back of his finger, and softly whispered words of encouragement to himself.
"Alright... let's just go back."

Although he’d insisted on not being given special treatment, drawing a line between himself and Zero, Kazusa felt dejected whenever Zero actually kept his distance. He’d been elated when Zero suddenly hugged him in front of Gazelle's room, only to feel crushed when that warmth faded and Zero pushed him away coldly.
Everything else was going fairly smoothly. But when it came to Zero, things never went as he hoped.
Zero’s words and actions threw him off, and he struggled to control his emotions.
As he navigated these emotionally turbulent days, Kazusa’s second heat was approaching, causing his tension to rise sharply.
The more experienced Serval didn’t seem particularly on guard. But as a beginner, he couldn’t take it that lightly. He understood that if he used his suppressants properly, he’d get through it without a problem, and that everything would be fine as long as he avoided contact with Zero.
But perhaps the habit of considering every possible risk was ingrained in him from his former life as a doctor.
The start and end dates of his first heat were recorded in his smartphone’s calendar app. According to it, if things went as expected, his heat was calculated to start tomorrow.
Some people have regular or irregular intervals between heats, depending on their physiology and genetic traits.
However, since he had a unique mutation, he couldn’t rely on familiar patterns for predictions.
Since his first heat had lasted exactly a week, he expected he might be the regular type.
Still, he couldn’t afford to let his guard down.
Accounting for potential discrepancies, he took a single pill at 5 p.m. the day before his scheduled heat start date. Perhaps because of this advance dosing, an entire day passed without any heat symptoms.
(Taking it early makes it hard to tell when the heat actually starts.)
Still, he felt too nervous to wait until it began, as there would be a delay until the suppressant took effect, risking the release of Omega pheromones in the meantime.
The thought of that happening during his lounge shift was terrifying.
Serval said that, with experience, you could begin to sense when it was starting…
Today, Inukai had reserved him at 6 p.m. And he’d even booked the VIP room. It was Inukai’s first time in the VIP room, as he’d never reserved a private room for any other host before.
Determined not to make any mistakes, Kazusa took a second dose 24 hours after the first, at 5 p.m., an hour before his 6 p.m. reservation with Inukai, ensuring the pill would be fully effective. Just in case, he put two spare pills in a pill case to carry with him.
At 5 p.m., he went down to the lounge, helped the floor staff with opening preparations, and then changed clothes in the back. Previously, he’d gone to the lounge in his everyday clothes, but now that he was getting reservations, he’d taken Serval’s advice to change into lounge attire—the ‘costume’, as everyone called it.
Tonight’s outfit was a specially chosen shirt and bottoms picked by Serval, his first ‘winning outfit’.
Serval, a VIP room expert, had suggested he ‘put in twice as much effort as usual’ and prepared the outfit just for tonight. According to him, “going all out in style is a way of showing courtesy to a client who’s taken the trouble to reserve a private room.”
At 5:45, Kazusa joined the shift members—Serval, Zebra, Leopard, Crow, Lycaon, and Fossa—in the first basement-level entrance hall for the routine meeting.
Zero began briefing them about notes from the previous night and special cases for the day.
“Today’s guests: six for the first shift—one of whom will be using the VIP room. Six more for the second shift, making a total of twelve. Lemur will be using the VIP room for the first time.”
Without looking at him, Zero delivered this announcement. Serval clapped and congratulated him with a “Congratulations!” His left arm had fully healed now, so there was no problem clapping.
“That’s amazing! First a regular, and now this!” Zebra and Giraffe also clapped, and Leopard whistled sharply. The mood was celebratory, though some of the hosts seemed indifferent. While Crow remained as uninvolved as ever, Lycaon and Fossa looked displeased. Lycaon, in particular, shot him a fierce glare.
The hosts were not only colleagues but also rivals vying for customers, so Kazusa could understand Lycaon and the others’ feelings.
(But more importantly...)
From the edge of the front row, Kazusa looked suspiciously at the tall man standing in front of everyone. As usual, his all-black ensemble highlighted his striking, untamed beauty.
"Tonight, let's aim to provide careful and sincere service so that our guests can enjoy a moment outside of the ordinary. That’s all. Dismissed."
In the end, he hadn’t made eye contact with Zero even once, not even during the usual closing remarks.
As Zero headed toward the office, Kazusa watched him with a longing gaze until Serval spoke to him.
“Hey, Sensei.”
"That outfit looks great after all. Simple, but with a touch of flair—really suits you."
"...Yeah."
"Huh? Why so down?"
Serval’s comment made Kazusa realise just how disheartened he’d been.
(So... I was hoping for it.)
Deep down, he’d secretly hoped Zero would praise him for securing the VIP room reservation.
Feeling like a child wanting his teacher’s approval, he was disappointed by his foolish wish not coming true.
To snap himself out of this downward spiral, he slapped his own cheeks with both hands.
"Oh, you’re pumped! Enjoy your first VIP room!" Serval, misinterpreting his gesture, patted him on the shoulder. Kazusa replied, "Thanks. You hang in there too."
