"But the Third Squad officers are proceeding with the investigation based on their biassed assumption that ‘most stray Omegas are drug addicts who sell their bodies to fund their addiction.’"
"Your brother and his right-hand man have denied the charges in the interrogation and are now exercising their right to remain silent. Frustrated by this, Third Squad threw them into the detention centre."
Honjou’s supplementary explanation drew a response from Kariya: "I understand the circumstances."
"As you know, Third Squad sees us in First Squad as their rivals. Though, to be fair, it’s mostly one-sided on their part… Already, they were excited by an Alpha-related case, an ideal opportunity for them to score points. And to top it off, they’ve found out that the suspect is the elder brother of First Squad’s ‘super rookie.’ This is a perfect chance for them to trip up a rookie they find annoying, so they’re unlikely to release him easily. Right now, they’re probably huddled together in the fifth-floor meeting room, strategizing."
Listening to Honjou’s analysis, Kazusa realised that even within the detective division, there were complex human relationships. He remembered the factions formed by university backgrounds in his former workplace. Perhaps that’s just the way organisations are.
"If we get involved, it will only complicate things further. Besides, your brother himself doesn’t want to involve Toomine-sensei, Crow, the stray Omegas in the shelter, or you, his younger brother. So, what do you want to do?"
Honjou’s question, which seemed to test his partner’s capability, left Kariya in thought for a moment.
"…Excuse me, I’ll make a call."
After excusing himself, Kariya took out his smartphone and moved to the edge of the floor. A few minutes later, he returned from his call, and Honjou asked him in a suggestive tone:
"Did you call ‘that’ person?"
"Yes."
Kazusa asked, "Who is it?" but Kariya deflected with, "I’m sorry. I can’t say right now, but you’ll find out soon."
Although he didn’t reveal who it was, it seemed like whoever he called would be coming here.
After about fifteen minutes of waiting with only that vague hint, Kariya’s phone chimed with a notification.
Checking the message, Kariya announced, "It seems they’ve arrived. I’ll go meet them," and left the floor.
(Who could ‘that’ person possibly be?)
Kazusa had no idea, but he could sense that this person held a key to resolving the case.
Five tense minutes passed before Kariya returned with two men.
One was a tall man in a three-piece suit, wearing a tie and a trench coat, and the other was a man in a dark suit and glasses who followed closely behind like a shadow.
The man in the trench coat possessed a rare beauty, different from Zero, Kariya, or Honjou. In terms of sheer perfection, he was the most striking.
Grayish-brown hair slicked back, a prominent forehead, a noble nose, delicate eyebrows framing light-coloured eyes, and firm lips. Even in the middle of the night, he looked immaculate, as if he hadn’t been summoned out of the blue—a flawless presence.
Kariya introduced this statuesque man with sharp features.
"This is my eldest brother, Keiki."
(So, he’s Zero’s older brother.)
The three brothers each had their own unique looks, but Keiki and Kariya shared certain features, such as their refined eyebrows, noble nose, and blue-tinted grey eyes—though Keiki’s were a bit lighter in colour.
The eldest and youngest brothers seemed to share the same mother. Compared to them, Zero, with his foreign heritage, looked distinctly different.
―――I was taken in by my patron father and grew up feeling out of place as the only one with different traits in my family.
As Kazusa recalled Zero’s words, Keiki removed his trench coat, and the man in glasses quickly took it from him.
"Pleased to meet you. My name is Shutou Keiki."
Now in his three-piece suit, the eldest brother greeted us in a calm, deep voice.
(Shutou?)
Kazusa felt a bit unsettled by his different last name from Kariya’s, but it didn’t feel like the right moment to ask.
"Nice to see you again," Honjou responded, implying they’d met before. Crow merely nodded quietly.
"Nice to meet you. I’m Toomine."
Though feeling a bit intimidated by the aura of overwhelming elitism radiating from the man before him, Kazusa managed to return the greeting.
"I heard you’re an orthopaedic surgeon, Toomine-san."
"Formerly. I now work as staff at a lounge."
Keiki gave a slight nod, then introduced the man standing slightly behind him.
"This is my secretary."
The man in glasses gave a polite bow. Bringing along a secretary even in the dead of night hinted at his high status.
"I’ve heard the general circumstances from Kouki."
With introductions completed, Keiki proceeded to the main topic.
"As you may already know, Reiki has been out of touch for a long time. Given his complex circumstances and his choice to leave on his own, we respected his wishes and refrained from searching for him. But learning of his whereabouts today in such an unexpected way came as a surprise even to me."
Though he was likely surprised, his cool expression betrayed no emotion.
"Whether Reiki wants to reunite with his family is something we’ll have to confirm with him directly. However, as his older brother, I can’t ignore the fact that he’s being held in a detention centre."
His voice was steady, filled with unmistakable determination.
"I believe in my brother’s innocence. But in any case, we should hear his side of the story firsthand."
Keiki’s secretary began to speak once Keiki’s statement was finished; "We have already arranged everything regarding this matter, so please wait a moment."
(Arranged?)
Wondering what this meant, Kazusa noticed that Kariya, who had apparently discussed this in advance with the eldest brother over the phone, said, "This room is a bit cramped; let’s move to the conference room."
Everyone went up to the third floor. Kariya opened the conference room door with an ID card, turned on the lights, and invited everyone in with a "Please, go on ahead." The room was arranged with a large, oval table surrounded by over a dozen chairs, with a large projector screen at the front.
"Please, everyone, take a seat."
At the same moment that Keiki, his secretary, Honjou, Crow, and Kazusa sat down, the automatic doors to the conference room slid open with a whir, and a burly man with a rugged face entered.
"First Squad Commander Onizuka."
Kariya walked over to the man who appeared to be in his mid-fifties.
