Without even a moment to relax after the stakeout concluded, the tough Kariya, who had restored his second brother’s reputation and mediated between his eldest and second brothers, didn’t show a hint of exhaustion. Seeming impressed, Kazusa said, “Uh, excuse me,” and addressed him.

Now that nearly all the mysteries had been cleared up, he dared to ask the one question that had lingered in his mind.

“May I ask? Why do you have different last names from your brothers?”

“Oh...Kariya is my mother’s maiden name. If people knew I was part of the Shutou family and an Alpha, it would make it harder to focus purely on my work, so I intentionally keep the Shutou name hidden.”

Once explained, it made perfect sense. As a member of the prestigious Shutou family, even if he didn’t want it, he’d inevitably receive special treatment. Having just witnessed the deputy chief’s obvious brown-nosing, Kazusa could easily imagine it.

For Kariya, who wanted to be evaluated as just a police officer, without any tinted lenses, the Shutou name would only get in the way.

Life as an Alpha, too, isn’t all benefits for those who don’t want to rest on their privileges.

“It would also make relationships with coworkers less straightforward.”

“At the D-East Station, only the chief, deputy chief, Section Chief Onizuka, and me, his buddy, know about his background,” Honjou added.

With that, Honjou turned to his informant, “So, Crow, make sure not to reveal that Kariya is an Alpha and from the Shutou family. Not even if someone offers a lot of money.”

“I get it.”

Crow responded nonchalantly.

“For the owner’s sake, I’ll waive the hush money this time.”

“You’re such a tsundere.”

Honjou placed a hand on Crow’s head and ruffled his hair roughly.

“Cut it out.”

Crow, genuinely annoyed, slapped Honjou’s hand away. Seeing this more human side of Crow, something they hadn’t seen before, Kazusa couldn’t help but chuckle. In just a few hours, his impression of Crow had completely changed.

Zero turned to face Crow.

“I heard from Kouki, who came to get me from the holding cell earlier, about everything that’s happened up until now. Thanks to you taking action and connecting me to Kouki, we were able to clear our names. You helped us out. Thank you.”

“It’s nothing. You and Hawk have helped me out plenty, too. So, now we’re even.”

Crow replied nonchalantly and then spun around, hunching his shoulders as he began to walk away.

“Aren’t you going to share a cab with us?”

Kazusa called out, but Crow curtly responded, “I’m walking home,” and left without looking back.

“Well, today was one out-of-character thing after another for him. He’s probably feeling awkward about it, huh?”

Honjou expressed what was likely going on in the informant’s mind. Apparently, Honjou had no intention of telling Zero and Hawk that Crow had swallowed his pride and asked for help to save them. The only ones who knew about this ‘uncharacteristic Crow’ were Honjou and himself. Kazusa decided he’d take it to the grave as well.

“If you’re planning to grab a cab, I can actually give you a lift,” Keiki offered as he returned, having been talking to someone on his phone a little distance away. Zero glanced at the black limousine parked behind Kariya’s silver two-seater and politely declined, “I appreciate it, but I can’t exactly head back to Deep Downtown in such a conspicuous car.”

“Good point,” Keiki agreed readily, and then added to Zero, “Reiki, I won’t ask you to show up at the Shutou family estate, but let’s at least have a meal together next time.”

“Yeah, let’s do that.”

“Kouki, you should come by home every now and then too.”

“Understood. But you make sure not to overwork yourself, Nii-san.”

“Yes, you too.”

“Nii-san, Kouki, thank you for today. I’ll be in touch.”

Once the three brothers finished their farewells, Kazusa gave Keiki a respectful bow and said, “Thank you for your hard work.” Honjou and Hawk also nodded in farewell.

Keiki acknowledged them with a slight nod before getting into the back seat. Watching him settle comfortably into the luxury limo’s rear seat from outside, he seemed like someone from a completely different world, making it hard to believe they’d been chatting so casually just moments before.

“Alright, I’m heading off too,” Kariya said.

“Reiki-niisan, I’ll drop by ‘RARE’ to visit you soon.”

“Sure, I’ll be waiting.”

“Honjou-san, get in,” Kariya prompted him. Honjou, with a light jab, replied, “Don’t act so high and mighty,” then turned to face Kazusa.

“See ya. And good job today, Sensei.”

“Thank you for everything today, Honjou-san. You really helped us out.”

It was thanks to Honjou that he’d been able to get into D-East Station. Without him, he’d likely still be stuck by the roadside with Crow, waiting in frustration.

“Don’t worry about it. Besides, it was pretty entertaining seeing the deputy chief grovelling and the Third Squad getting a severe scolding. As two people who work Downtown, if fate brings us together again, let’s grab a drink.”

“Yes, I look forward to it.”

It wasn’t out of obligation that he said it; he genuinely looked forward to that day. Though he hadn’t known Honjou for long, he’d come to like this sharp-tongued, striking man who was so different from himself.

Honjou got into the passenger seat, Kariya’s two-seater drove off, and the secretary-driven limousine followed. After watching until the two cars disappeared from view, the remaining three walked to the main street to hail a taxi. Kazusa, Zero, and Hawk got into the rear seat in that order.

As the car began to move, Zero turned to Hawk and said, “You’ve had a rough time too, haven’t you?”

It was then he realised he hadn’t heard Hawk speak much up to this point. He wasn’t one for idle chatter, but still.

“Compared to the struggles of establishing ‘RARE’, this was no big deal.”

With his calm response, Zero raised an eyebrow, replying in an approving tone, “True enough.”

To go from absolutely nothing, “zero”, and establish ‘RARE’ in such a short time and have it running smoothly would not have been easy, even for someone like Zero. For Hawk, who had endured those challenging days by his side, this sort of trouble was nothing at all.

(Even so… I’m glad it was resolved safely.)

*Translator’s Note: Pardon if there are any discrepancies, especially in the character’s name. Kariya is Kouki and Zero is Reiki. I intend to use Kariya and Zero in texts, while Kouki and Reiki in conversation. If there are any mistakes, just ignore them. As usual, I have no time to go back and proofread the whole thing. -K
