Since his locker had been locked, Kazusa initially thought he must have left the pouch somewhere by mistake. He searched every corner of the backroom, only to find the pouch in the trash. The pouch and its contents had been thrown away separately, and the gauze and bandages—items meant for hygiene—were covered with shoe prints. It was as if someone had stomped on them repeatedly, with deliberate malice.

The next day, Kazusa woke up feeling groggy and unsettled after two nights of restless sleep.

The situation only got worse.

Even though he had double-checked that his locker was locked before his shift, when he returned afterward, his locker had been stuffed with food waste.

“…Ugh.”

The stench of rotting food made Kazusa cover his mouth and nose. Someone had taken kitchen waste, the most pungent kind—seafood scraps—and crammed them into his locker.

“This is… awful.”

This was the first time Kazusa had experienced such direct and malicious harassment. He stood there, feeling stunned.

There was only one group of people Kazusa could think of who would stoop to such low-level bullying: them. Two of the three had been on shift both the previous day and today.

For people like them, who had grown up in the slums, it was probably child’s play to pick a locker lock with something as simple as a piece of wire. Still, without concrete evidence, all Kazusa had were suspicions.

Lycaon and his group were cunning; they always carried out their harassment in the backroom. Under Zero’s policy of trusting the cast and staff, there were no security cameras in the backroom.

Even though Kazusa had no proof, he could report the harassment. However, he didn’t tell Zero or Serval about the trouble he was facing.

Zero had already warned Lycaon after his suspension, saying, “There won’t be a next time.”

If this really was Lycaon’s doing, then while Fossa and Jackal might face consequences, Lycaon, as the ringleader, would be kicked out of ‘Rare’. If that happened, what would become of Lycaon?

Even though Kazusa didn’t know much about the lives of Stray Omegas, he could easily imagine that it would be nothing short of living hell.

And Zero must know that Lycaon admired him. Kazusa didn’t want to be the one to force Zero to make the painful decision to cut ties with someone who respected him so much. It would leave a scar on his heart… Kazusa didn’t want Zero to go through something similar to what he had with his mother.

(So does that mean… I have no choice but to wait for them to get bored of tormenting me?)

Kazusa had no idea when that would be… and the thought of it filled him with dread.

What troubled him even more was the feeling that their actions were escalating day by day.

For now, he could still deal with the aftermath in secret, but…

A chill ran down his spine as he recalled the scar Serval had from the knife wound.

Lycaon claimed that the reason he hated Kazusa was because he was a former doctor, a "newbie" Omega acting like he was one of the team. But was that really all there was to it?

From the moment they first met, the instant their eyes met, Lycaon had seemed to harbour hostility toward him.

At that time, Lycaon had been under suspension. So Kazusa didn’t think he could have known anything about him being a former doctor.

And yet, the way he looked at Kazusa, it was as if he were an enemy…

(There must be something more to it…)

As Kazusa pondered the possible reasons behind Lycaon’s hatred, he cleaned up the food waste, wiping down the inside of his locker. No matter how many times he wiped, the foul smell lingered. It was only after using a special cleaning agent that he was able to get rid of the odour. By the time he finished cleaning, both his body and mind were exhausted. The fatigue from consecutive shifts, combined with his lack of sleep, had worn him down. On top of that, his left knee seemed to hurt more than it had in the morning.

As he limped along, carrying the bucket of water he had used for cleaning, his knee suddenly gave way after just a few steps.

“Ah…!”

Kazusa stumbled, spilling half the bucket of water.

“…Ah, damn…”

There was no use crying over spilled milk, as the saying goes. His vision dimmed as despair crept in. …He felt like crying for real.

He wanted to throw everything aside and walk away, but he knew he couldn’t. Kazusa fetched a rag and got down on his hands and knees to wipe the floor around the locker area.

After finishing with the floor, he washed the rag, disposed of the rest of the water without spilling it this time, and was about to leave the backroom when his phone started to buzz in his pocket. Kazusa pulled the smartphone from the back pocket of his pants. When he saw ‘Mom’ displayed on the home screen, his breath caught in his throat.

“Mom…?”

Up until that moment, he had completely forgotten about his parents back in the countryside. He was surprised at how he had pushed them from his mind, even though he’d been so focused on adjusting to his new life.

(...What should I do?)

After a long hesitation, he tapped the accept call button.

“H-Hello? Is something the matter?”

“Hello, Kazusa? No, nothing in particular. I just wanted to know how you were doing.”

His heart skipped a beat. His family back home didn’t know about the drastic changes that had happened in his life. He hadn’t told them.

“Oh… yeah, I’m doing fine. Sorry for not keeping in touch.”

“That’s all right. You’re still as busy as ever, aren’t you? Everyone here is doing fine as well, so just focus on your work. You’ve got an important job after all… saving lives.”

Hearing his mother’s proud voice—clearly proud of her son, who worked as a doctor in the city—Kazusa’s hand, holding the phone, trembled slightly.

“…Mom.”

“What is it? Why do you sound so serious all of a sudden?”

Kazusa gripped his phone tightly, questioning himself.

Should he tell her the truth?

But what would happen if he did? It would only make her sad.

His parents wouldn’t be able to accept the change in their son.

They would suffer, unable to come to terms with the fact that he is an Omega now…

Kazusa closed his eyes, reaching his conclusion. Thus, in a hoarse voice, he said: “…It’s nothing. I’ll call you again someday.”

*Translator’s Note: When I read the novel, I kinda skimmed through this part. But now that I’m translating it, ugh….I’m dreading doing it. There might be a few grammatical errors here. So just ignore it please. I’ve been away for some time but I’m trying to get back into this. I hope I’m not too out of sync and if I am, please excuse me for that. -K
