“You got any connections with the police? Without any, I think you’ll just get turned away at the door.”

Kazusa looked in the direction of the voice and was surprised to see an unexpected face.

“What…?”

A boy, dressed all in black with a hood pulled up and black-framed glasses, had appeared next to him. His small frame was swallowed up by his oversized outfit, and Kazusa found himself looking twice.

“C-Crow!”

It was the first time Crow had spoken to him—actually, the first time he’d even heard Crow’s voice.

The other members of ‘RARE’ seemed equally caught off guard, staring at this ‘outsider’ who never spoke, even when dealing with customers.

“The men from earlier are from the Downtown East Station— D-East Station’s Detective Division, 3rd Squad, commonly known as the Organized Crime Unit.”

Ignoring everyone’s stunned attention, Crow continued in an even tone.

“Organized Crime Unit?”

Kazusa echoed the unfamiliar term.

“The Organized Crime Countermeasures Division. They handle things like street gangs and outlaws, mainly regulating firearms, blades, and drugs.”

“Why do you know that…?”

Serval, suspicious, cut in, but Kazusa quickly hushed him. The boy didn’t seem nervous, nor did he appear to be bluffing. Kazusa turned to Crow and asked, “Can I ask? Why would detectives from the Organized Crime Unit be taking Zero and Hawk?”

“It’s just a guess, but I think they’re suspected of drug trafficking.”

“Drugs? You mean narcotics? Zero wouldn’t…-”

“-Deal in that,” Crow calmly confirmed.

“It’s just a false accusation to get them arrested. The exact charges don’t matter. To them, the Owner is some shady guy who runs a lounge with stray Omegas. One of the clients, furious, stormed into the station and ranted, ‘That place is doing illegal things! Arrest the Owner!’—and the one complaining is an Alpha, making it hard for them to ignore. To pacify him, they’ve hauled Zero in, figuring if they dig deep enough, they’ll find something.”

Serval exclaimed in amazement, “You can actually speak!”

Kazusa, still tense, confirmed, “So, basically, there’s a possibility they could fabricate crimes Zero didn’t commit?”

Crow nodded.

The residents, who had been holding their breath watching Crow and Kazusa, began muttering, “Are you serious?” “That’s bad,” “What are we gonna do?”

(If Zero ends up in jail because of me… or worse, in prison…)

Kazusa’s hands turned numb and tingled as the shock set in.

(It’s my fault…)

Just as he clenched his tingling fingers tightly, Crow offered a piece of good news.

“I have a connection at D-East Station.”

“Really?!” Kazusa’s voice came out louder than expected. Crow didn’t react much, only saying, “Follow me,” before walking ahead.

No one knew much about Crow—why he had so much information or even who he really was. Crow had always kept to himself, refusing to mingle with the other residents.

But his desire to help Zero and Hawk must be the same as everyone else’s.

(I just have to trust him.)

“Got it.”

“I’m coming too!”

Crow stopped Serval, who had volunteered, without even turning around. "No. If too many people go, it’ll look like an attack. The fewer people, the better, to avoid provoking them."

***

They hailed a taxi on the main street. Kazusa and Crow headed to the D-East Station. The anxiety and urgency rising within Kazusa made it impossible for him to sit still, so he tried to distract himself by talking to Crow.

"Um… may I ask one more thing?"

“You want to know why I have connections with the police?”

“…Yeah.”

Just from their exchange so far, Kazusa could tell Crow was quick-witted.

Crow’s side profile remained fixed on the road ahead, deep in thought, before he muttered, “…Well, I guess I can tell you, as long as you keep it to yourself. The others talk too much.”

Kazusa nodded, “Understood.” Serval and the younger crew, in particular, were certainly prone to gossip.

“My main job is information broker.”

“Information broker?”

“I gather information and sell it. Some of my clients are in law enforcement.”

As Crow revealed this, Kazusa took another look at the young boy who could easily pass as a teenager.

From the confidence in Crow’s tone, it was clear he had some experience. This would mean he’d likely been working as an information broker since his early teens.

Kazusa’s curiosity stirred, wondering about the boy’s background. But he resisted the urge to dig deeper.

"If being an information broker is your main job, then what about working as a host?"

“I’m at the lounge to listen to clients’ conversations. Most of the lounge members are wealthy people, the kind I don’t usually get access to. They’re valuable sources of information.”

So that was why Crow purposefully avoided getting regular customers and kept his service low-key. By staying an assistant, he could interact with a wide range of clients without the hassle of maintaining regulars or engaging in the pretence of romantic relationships. Since hosting was just a side job, he didn’t need to earn much from it.

He’d chosen an inconspicuous spot at the edge of the seating area, quietly observing clients and gathering information.

“Does Zero know about your real job?”

“He does. I told him everything when we met. He accepted me, fully aware, and even gave me a place to stay.”

“…I see.”

That sounded like Zero. Just as with Kazusa, Zero was the kind of man who would take on someone’s troubles and past without hesitation.

Suddenly, Crow turned to look at him, his eyes surprisingly clear behind his black-framed glasses.

“That’s why I owe him.”

Despite his usual distance, Crow was willing to act now, even going against his principles, to help Zero in his time of need. The residents were also deeply worried, as if it were their own problem.

“I feel the same way,” Kazusa said, agreeing with Crow.

“Let’s do whatever it takes to save Zero and Hawk.”

Just after he spoke, the taxi arrived at their destination. Kazusa paid, and he and Crow got out in front of D-East Station.

The station was a bare-bones, five-story building with a typical police station look.

Since Kazusa’s former workplace was in the downtown east area, he had passed by here a few times but had never entered. Now, just past midnight, most of the windows were dark, though a few were still lit by fluorescent lights. Kazusa felt a sense of urgency imagining that somewhere beyond those windows, Zero and Hawk might be undergoing interrogation.

He wanted to enter immediately, but a uniformed officer stood in front of the automatic entrance doors, holding a long wooden staff like a gatekeeper. If they got too close, the officer would almost certainly stop them. Even if he explained the situation, he doubted they’d be let inside. Once turned away, they wouldn’t get a second chance.

“What’s the plan now?”

Crow silently pulled out his smartphone, ignoring Kazusa’s question filled with frustration and desperation. With one hand, he began typing, seemingly using a messaging app.
