(A squad commander—that must mean he’s the head of the detective department.)
"Apologies for calling you here at such an hour."
With those words, it became clear that Kariya had made another call besides the one to Keiki.
"Being a cop, day and night don’t mean much. But unfortunately, I couldn’t get ahold of the Chief of the station. That sly fox must’ve turned off his phone. I did manage to reach the deputy chief, though. He should be hurrying over here right about now."
"Thank you for going through the trouble."
"No trouble at all. It was my responsibility for not keeping track of the Third Squad’s actions. I was negligent."
"I believe the case in question was handled independently by the Third Squad’s commander after you left the office today, so please don’t worry. I’ll go down to the basement to meet my brother."
"Take this with you."
The squad commander tossed him what seemed to be a key. Kariya caught it with a quick, firm grip and thanked him before leaving the conference room.
Kariya had just mentioned going down to the basement to meet his brother. So, does that mean he’s planning to get Zero and Hawk out of the detention centre and bring them here?
Kazusa wasn’t sure how things would go from here, but if they were released without further delay, it would mean that Crow and him had almost achieved the purpose of coming here.
As Kazusa sat there, fidgeting with anticipation, Honjou took the chance to introduce Kariya’s older brother and his secretary to the squad commander, saying, "This is Mr. Shutou and his secretary. This is the head of the detective division."
"Pleased to meet you. I’m Shutou."
Keiki stood up and extended his hand for a handshake with Onizuka.
"Thank you for looking after my younger brother."
"I’m Onizuka. It’s been a pleasure to work with your capable brother."
"I see."
For a fleeting moment, Keiki’s usually unreadable expression softened slightly, revealing a hint of familial affection. It seemed he cherished his much-younger brother.
On the other hand, Keiki himself had said earlier, "Whether Zero wants a reunion with the family is something we’ll need to ask him directly."
In reality, Zero left home seven years ago and hasn’t contacted his family since.
(…It must be complicated.)
A father who was his mother’s patron, a legitimate wife, and half-siblings who shared her blood.
As Kazusa pondered Zero’s feelings of isolation growing up, the sound of heavy footsteps echoed down the hallway, and the automatic doors opened. A large man, his body almost barrel-like and barely contained by his uniform, burst into the conference room, panting heavily.
"Superintendent."
Onizuka’s call revealed that this enormous man was the deputy chief. Ignoring Onizuka, the deputy chief glanced around the conference room, and upon spotting Keiki, his face broke into a broad, sweaty smile. With his hefty belly jiggling, he approached Keiki, shamelessly rubbing his hands together.
"Thank you so much for taking the time to come to such an unseemly place. I’d long heard about you, and it’s an honour to meet you in person. Your younger brother, Kariya, is handsome, but you’re even more strikingly good-looking—so dazzling, it’s almost blinding."
He piled on cheap flattery, extending his hand for a handshake. Keiki, however, merely frowned and ignored the sweaty hand. Honestly, Kazusa couldn’t blame him; he wouldn’t want to shake such a clammy hand either.
With a curt "Thank you," Keiki turned back toward Onizuka. Rebuffed, the deputy chief stiffened, his expression strained, as he awkwardly let his hand fall.
Once again, the automatic door slid open with a soft "whirr." Thinking it might finally be Zero, Kazusa rose halfway out of his seat, but the person who appeared was someone unexpected.
“Inukai-san...?”
Inukai, dressed in his usual attire of a soft hat and a three-piece suit, looked uncomfortable as he muttered to himself, “Is this the right conference room?” Noticing Kazusa, he raised his voice slightly. “Lemur?”
“What are you doing here?”
“I could ask you the same thing.”
Inukai continued with a sigh, “I got a call from a man who claimed to be Keiki Shutou’s secretary, telling me, ‘Please come to the conference room on the third floor of the D-East Station right away.’ I was already in bed… I would have ignored it if it hadn’t been from the Shutou family, but I thought I’d better check in case it was serious…”
Just as Inukai grumbled, Keiki’s secretary stepped in, saying, “I was the one who contacted you a short while ago.”
“You’re the secretary? Which means…”
Sliding his gaze from the secretary to the tall, handsome man standing beside him, Inukai’s eyes widened in shock.
“Shu… Shutou Keiki…”
Inukai’s lips trembled, and he froze in place, unable to move. The secretary invited him to “Please, take a seat,” and Inukai wobbled as he sat down in a nearby chair.
“Everyone, please take your seats and wait a little while longer.”
At that moment, the door opened, and the final members entered. Kariya was in the lead, followed by Zero and Hawk. Both of them were now unshackled.
(Zero!)
Kazusa couldn’t help but stand up. Zero looked at him, his eyes narrowing for some reason in a faintly wistful way.
“Reiki.”
Keiki, who had also risen, called out to him.
At the sound of his voice, Zero twitched slightly, turned toward Keiki, and his heterochromatic eyes slowly widened.
“Keiki-nii…”
Unaware he was witnessing a reunion between brothers after seven years, Inukai muttered in confusion, “Keiki-nii?”
“What’s going on? So… this man is part of the Shutou family?”
Inukai began to blurt out questions one after another, clearly rattled. Keiki fixed him with a stern gaze.
“The man you framed as a suspect in drug trafficking is my younger brother—Shutou Reiki.”
“Shutou… Reiki!”
Inukai’s voice choked as if he were being strangled, and he nearly fell out of his chair, barely managing to cling to the backrest. His hat tumbled to the floor in his stead.
Watching this pathetic display, a growing sense of unease began to fill Kazusa’s chest.
