Having indulged in their bestial coupling and released all their pent-up desires, Kazusa's heat seemed to have subsided for now. Physically and mentally drained, he lay sprawled on the bed as Zero, clad in a black robe, gently brushed his lips against Kazusa's cheek.

"Wait here a moment," Zero said, rising from the bed and exiting the bedroom.

Following Zero's retreating form, Kazusa took in the room's surroundings. Earlier, he had been too preoccupied to notice, but now he saw that the decor was distinctly Zero's - a sophisticated, monochromatic palette of blacks and greys.

(In Zero's bedroom, on Zero's bed... I had sex with him...)

It felt almost dreamlike, unreal. And yet, the lingering foreign sensation and the remnants of desire within him attested that this was no mere fantasy.

Lost in a haze, Kazusa was roused by the return of Zero, carrying a bottle of mineral water. His expression had regained much of its composure from the previous feral state.

Sitting on the edge of the bed, Zero handed the water bottle to Kazusa, along with two pills sealed in blister packs.

Putting on his glasses, Kazusa examined the pills in his palm. They were familiar - suppressants and an after-pill.

"These are suppressants, aren't they?"

"That's right. The pill and the after-pill. I keep a supply of the genuine ones, obtained from a black market doctor downtown. As you know, in ‘RARE’, the use of suppressants is left to individual discretion. I manage the distribution, keeping a reserve of after-pills in case of emergencies."

The emergencies are likely referred to instances of unwanted sexual encounters.

"So you even manage the pills?"

That's why Zero had been able to detect the fake one earlier. Kazusa, having just started taking the pills, had simply swallowed them down with water, unaware of any changes in smell or taste.

"The residents here lack the means to obtain the pills through proper channels. I procure them illegally, but since you mentioned having a prescription, I put off the application process for now."

"Yes, I had a three-month supply from a former colleague at the obstetrics clinic..."

Of which he had used one month's worth, plus one after-pill. The remaining pills and after-pill were now in the possession of the culprit who had switched them out.

With a grave expression, Zero spoke up. "About that, I owe you an apology. It was Lycaon who replaced your pills with fakes."

"...I see."

Kazusa had suspected as much, having witnessed Lycaon's expulsion.

"Most likely, on a night when I was off-duty, he snuck into my room and stole my spare keys. Then he used those to break into your room and switch out the real pills for the fake ones. His aim was to trigger your heat during your shift, forcing you out of the Lounge."

Recalling Lycaon's earlier behaviour, Kazusa could now understand the motivation behind his actions.

The fact that Lycaon was told to “get out” and followed the order without much resistance seemed like proof of Zero’s deduction.

“Even so, why would he do something like that? I tried to keep my distance from you and avoid provoking Lycaon as much as possible…”

“This is only speculation, but he probably didn’t like that you were gaining trust from the residents and increasing your presence. Furthermore, he felt threatened when you started attracting Alpha’s regular clients on the business front. He must’ve wanted to take you down before his own position was jeopardised. That’s my guess.”

Listening to Zero’s bitter conjecture, a memory Kazusa had almost forgotten resurfaced.

―――There’s still some cake left, so if you’d like, why don’t you join us?

After a study session on the community floor, he invited Jackal and Fossa for some cakes.

―――Lycaon… if you’d like, you’re welcome too…

Lycaon responded by kicking the wall in front of him with a bang and glaring at him.

(…Was it because of that?)

Kazusa had a bad feeling back then, but, busy with daily affairs, he neglected to follow up afterward. Despite telling Zero, who was concerned about his relationship with Lycaon, "I’ll resolve things with him in my own way, so please leave this to me.

Despite it all.

“This whole incident started because I failed to lock my room.”

Zero, looking regretful, bowed his head.

“I apologise.”

―――If you don’t first show trust, you’ll never gain it from the other side. You have to open your heart first, or the other won’t open theirs either.

Remembering the words Zero had said to him on his first day at ‘RARE’, Kazusa wanted to get up. Although he wanted to sit initially, he stopped himself, as that would have caused certain bodily fluids to leak out.

“No… I also share some of the blame regarding Lycaon.”

“You’re not at fault.”

Zero denied it immediately.

“The blame lies with me.”

Wanting to ease Zero’s self-blaming sense of responsibility, Kazusa spoke up.

“At first… if I’m being honest, I thought that leaving rooms unlocked in a group living environment seemed a bit careless. But, having lived as a member of ‘RARE’ for a month now, I realise that it’s exactly because of that openness that the residents feel comfortable with you.”

“One second…”

“To win the trust of people like them, who have lived as social outcasts and developed an intense wariness, one has to believe in them without reservation. I think your approach to commit fully and act on it is not wrong. Unfortunately, this time… that desire to trust was taken advantage of… But most of the residents genuinely trust you, their leader, and live here with smiles on their faces.”

“… … …”

Zero blinked slowly, his long eyelashes fluttering softly.

“Regarding Lycaon, his issues with Serval and the recent incident stem from his inability to control his emotions, which is a result of his upbringing. He survived a harsh life in the slums by eliminating anyone who might encroach on his territory…”

“I know that.”

Zero, who had been silently listening to Kazusa up until then, suddenly responded. His face showed an unmistakable expression of suppressed anger.

“But… I still can’t forgive him.”

“…Zero.”

“One wrong move, and you would have been forced to mate with that Alpha.”

Zero’s low voice carried a hint of suppressed rage.

“In that regard, I’m truly grateful you prevented that from happening. Thank you so much for helping…”

“Stop!”

Zero cut off Kazusa’s words of thanks with a loud voice, clenching his fists so tightly his knuckles turned white.

*Translator’s Note: There might be some discrepancies with dialogues from this chapter to previous ones. I don’t have time to go back and copy the exact words (why the heck does this author love to use flashbacks ugh) to make them tally. The context is still the same though. Thank you for your understanding.  -K
