Come to think of it, just before they’d gotten in the taxi, Crow had also been messaging someone on his phone.
After sending his message, Crow put his phone away and said, "We’ll wait here," then fell silent again. Kazusa had no choice but to follow his lead, trusting Crow and his police connections.
If they were supposed to wait, then someone must be coming out of the building.
The two stood together in a spot along the roadside facing the D-East Police Station grounds, hidden from the gatekeeper’s view, watching the automatic doors in silence.
However, no one came out. Five minutes passed, then ten, and Kazusa grew increasingly restless, shifting from foot to foot. Still not here. Still not coming. What could be happening to Zero and Hawk in the meantime…?
Growing impatient, Kazusa turned to Crow.
“Hey, is someone really going to—”
“-He’s here.”
“...!”
Kazusa quickly turned back around, his gaze falling on a slender figure stepping out of the automatic doors. The figure was backlit, obscuring their face, but they wore a hooded mod coat, tight pants, and sneakers, a casual look. Judging by their build, they appeared to be male.
A uniformed officer noticed the man and saluted. The man simply nodded in return, hands still tucked into his coat pockets, as he walked across the grounds and headed straight toward them. As he drew closer, his features became visible.
He had porcelain-like skin, sleek, defined eyebrows, almond-shaped, narrow eyes, a thin, straight nose, and reddish lips. A row of piercings adorned his left ear. His glossy black hair partially obscured his face, but even with just this, it was clear he was exceptionally attractive.
Even Kazusa, who was accustomed to the handsome faces of Zero and the other rogue Omegas, found himself momentarily captivated by the man’s beauty.
"What’s got the wind blowing in this direction? You showing up at the station?" he spoke in a unique, raspy voice directed at Crow.
If this man was Crow’s police contact, then he must be a plainclothes detective. Despite his rough appearance and air of dark charm, which didn’t exactly scream ‘detective’, the fact that the uniformed officer saluted him meant his rank was surely higher.
"If this is some trouble, count me out, alright? I was just about to finally catch some sleep in a proper bed after a stakeout. Damn, I shouldn’t have checked my phone."
Grumbling complaints, the man yawned, not hiding his annoyance at the unexpected visit. He seemed genuinely busy, and getting him to cooperate might be difficult.
“So? Who’s this?” he asked, nodding towards Kazusa with a casual tilt of his chin.
Kazusa hastily introduced himself. “My name is Toomine.”
“This guy was a doctor until recently,” Crow added by way of explanation, causing the man to raise an eyebrow with a mildly interested “Oh?”
“‘Was’… meaning you aren’t anymore?” he asked.
Kazusa hesitated for a moment but figured it was best to be honest if he wanted this man’s help.
"One month ago, it was discovered that I was a latent Omega, so my medical licence was revoked, and I was fired from my job."
"A latent Omega, eh…"
"I lost everything and fell into despair. I was on the verge of jumping off the dormitory roof when someone saved me. Not only did he save my life, but he also provided me with a place to stay, comrades, and even a reason to live. I’m currently at a shelter he set up exclusively for stray Omegas."
At some point during Kazusa’s story, the man’s eyebrows twitched slightly in reaction to one of his statements.
"My benefactor and his right-hand man were taken by the police about an hour ago. But they haven’t done anything to break the law."
Crow picked up where Kazusa left off.
“The two of them were detained by detectives from the Third Squad of the D-East Station. They’re likely being interrogated somewhere in this building.”
Kazusa continued, “An Alpha is behind the police action, and it’s possible that the truth could be twisted, leading to false charges against them.”
“Amane,” Crow called the man’s name, his tone more formal than before.
"I want to prove their innocence. They’re benefactors to me as well."
With a serious expression, Crow suddenly leaned forward to bow down.
"…Please help us. I’m begging you."
"..."
It was unexpected to see him act this way, so Kazusa was taken aback. Even Amane, the one Crow was bowing to, looked frozen in shock, his eyes wide.
After a moment, Kazusa snapped back to reality and followed Crow’s lead, bending down deeply.
"Please, from me as well!"
As he kept his hands by his sides and continued bowing, he heard another “damn it” from above.
"Cut it out with the uncharacteristic behaviour."
At the irritated voice, he straightened up, only to see the man’s displeased expression.
"Information brokers shouldn’t appeal emotionally… it’s throwing me off."
Amane, scowling with his handsome face, spun around. As he started walking back the way he’d come, he said,
"…Follow me."
Crow and Kazusa exchanged glances, and then in the next moment, they both took off running. Crow called out to the man leading the way, "Amane."
"Thank you. I owe you one."
Amane didn’t look back at Crow’s words of gratitude. He only casually waved one hand.
Following Amane, Kazusa and Crow passed through the automatic doors and entered the D-East Station building. Due to the time, the information counter was empty, and both the lobby and the interior were quiet.
"If Organized Crime brought them in, does that mean the charge is drug trafficking?" Amane asked as they crossed the lobby toward the elevator.
"…Probably," Crow replied.
"He's running a lounge in Deep Downtown."
"The combination of Deep Downtown and a lounge is pretty dangerous."
"But it’s not that kind of lounge. It’s actually very wholesome," Kazusa added quickly, defending the place.
Amane scoffed slightly. "What’s a ‘wholesome’ lounge supposed to be? No alcohol, no touching?"
"No… They serve alcohol," Kazusa corrected.
"Thought so."
They arrived at the elevator, and Amane shrugged, pressing the call button. The door soon opened. Kazusa and Crow followed Amane inside the elevator.
"…And of all things, it’s the Third Squad. That’s a pain," Amane said as he pressed the floor button, scratching his chin with his finger.
"A pain… why’s that?"
"The Third Squad has the roughest bunch of detectives. After all, they’re always dealing with a tough crowd."
