Now that it was mentioned, Kazusa remembered that the detective in charge and his subordinates all had a similarly rowdy, rough demeanour—and they’d actually been quite aggressive.

It was clear this wasn’t going to be easy.

(But there’s no choice.)

He resolved himself, determined not to leave until Zero and Hawk were released.

As he readied himself, a soft *ding* sounded.

"We’re here."

Amane exited the elevator on the second floor and started walking down the hallway. As they progressed, doors appeared on both sides, with signs like ‘Security Department’, ‘Document Distribution Room’, ‘Communications Room’, and ‘Archives’. At the end of the hallway, a double door was open, revealing part of the floor beyond. The orderly layout of desks made it look like an ordinary office at first glance. At the moment, no one was at the desks.

(So this is… the Detective Department.)

Kazusa swallowed nervously. This was his first time setting foot in the heart of a police station.

Unlike the tense Kazusa, Amane strode confidently across the floor, clearly familiar with his surroundings, as Crow and him followed closely behind.

The entire wall of windows on the Detective Division floor had its blinds firmly shut. A large desk was placed in front of the windows, and office desks were arranged perpendicular to it. There were three long rows of desks, each with eight seats. Most of the ‘inhabitants’ of these desks seemed to have already left, though a few desks here and there still had their lights on.

“Ah? Where the hell did Kariya go?” Amane, sounding annoyed as he searched for someone, stood slightly behind Kazusa, who scanned the room.

There was a partitioned-off area that looked like a reception space, a meeting area with a large table and whiteboard, and a row of lockers lined up against the wall. Kazusa’s gaze stopped at the right-hand wall, where three doors were lined up. Each door had a plate that read ‘Interrogation Room 1’, ‘Interrogation Room 2’, and ‘Meeting Room’.

Seeing the words ‘Interrogation Room’, Kazusa's heart skipped a beat. Amane, noticing Kazusa’s gaze, muttered, "Both are in use."

(Could it be… that Zero and Hawk are behind those doors?)

As Kazusa held his breath and stared intently at the interrogation room doors, one of them, the second, suddenly opened. Out came Hawk, accompanied by two detectives.

"Hawk!"

At Kazusa’s call, Hawk turned around.

“Lemur? Crow?”

Just as Hawk, sounding surprised, spoke, the other door opened. A young detective in a suit appeared, followed by a tall man in a long black coat. His dark hair shimmered with golden highlights, and his skin was a rich brown, with a profile as finely sculpted as a statue.

"Zero!"

Zero flinched and turned quickly.

"Kazusa?"

His heterochromatic eyes widened in surprise.

"Crow, too… Why are you here?"

Kazusa, who was about to answer Zero’s question, suddenly noticed something strange about Zero's hands and gasped. Handcuffs were locked around his wrists.

Seeing the one he loved being treated like a criminal left him in shock, his mind going blank.

"This is terrible… Why?"

Kazusa instinctively moved to rush over to Zero, but a sharp "Don’t come closer!" stopped him in his tracks. Zero’s cold, distant expression halted Kazusa, who froze, his face stricken.

"Why did you come?"

Swallowing his shock, Kazusa struggled to respond with a hoarse voice.

"I… I wanted to help you."

"There’s no need. This has nothing to do with you."

Zero’s curt words left Kazusa speechless.

(...Nothing to do…?)

“Just go. Crow, you too.”

Crow’s shoulders shook. Even with his glasses, it was clear he was just as shocked.

With that, Zero turned his back to them, rejecting both Kazusa and Crow.

"Zero… everyone is worried. We want to help however we can."

“Don’t make me repeat myself. I don’t need any help. Go.”

As Kazusa struggled to find any words for the unyielding Zero, a stern voice echoed across the room.

“What’s with all the noise?”

The last person to exit from Interrogation Room 1 was a man in his late forties, who looked at Kazusa and Crow with furrowed brows. It was the hefty detective in a double-breasted suit who had led the arrest.

“Who let them in here? This area is off-limits to outsiders.”

“That would be me.”

Amane stepped forward, prompting the man to scowl.

“Honjou… so it was you.”

The man spat out his words with a face twisted in disgust. His three subordinates, all with equally displeased expressions, glared at Amane, clearly disliking him.

"And what’s with those cuffs? Isn’t this a voluntary interrogation?"

The man in the double-breasted suit pursed his lips in displeasure at Amane’s pointed question.

"Are you saying that people running a lounge in Deep Downtown are the kind you'd slap handcuffs on without a second thought, Third Squad's Chief?"

The man, the chief of Third Squad, clicked his tongue in response to the sarcastic, overly polite tone and shot back, "Shut up."

"This has nothing to do with you, First Squad. This is our case."

"Your case, huh? By the way, what were the charges when you picked him up?"

"Drugs. We got a tip that there was rampant drug trafficking going on in the lounge these guys were running."

As expected, the charges were drug trafficking. The one who provided the fabricated tip was—though not currently present—almost certainly Inukai.

"And? Has he confessed?"

In response to Amane's questioning, the chief replied with a sullen look, "Not yet."

"He denied the charges and is now exercising his right to remain silent."

"I see."

"But it's only a matter of time. The ones working at the lounge he runs are stray Omegas. They're junkies who'll sell their bodies and drugs just to get money for their next fix. They're the lowest of the low."

"Hey."

Zero, who had been standing silently with his back turned, spoke in a low voice at the blatant prejudice. He turned to face the chief, his eyes glinting sharply.

"If you continue to insult my casts any further, I won't let it slide."

The chief flinched at the menacing tone in Zero's voice, but immediately, perhaps conscious of his subordinates' eyes on him, he puffed out his chest and gave a loud order.

*Translator’s Note: It’s a wonder how people can’t tell Zero is an alpha too. Hmm… Well, up to the author. -K
