"R-really?"
Because he rarely looked in the mirror carefully, Kazusa didn’t really notice any changes in himself.
"Oh, I get it! Lemur, you’re in love, aren’t you?"
Giraffe’s sudden, out-of-the-blue remark made Kazusa choke on the tea he had been drinking.
"D-don’t tease adults like that," Kazusa warned, but Serval quickly jumped on the topic.
"Who’s the lucky person? Someone from here, maybe?"
"Maybe it's a customer? You’ve been having lively conversations lately," Giraffe added, joining in. Kazusa shook his head. "No, no. That's not it at all!"
"What’s all the excitement about?" Zebra, sitting across from him, leaned in curiously. Giraffe, grinning, answered, "We’re talking about Lemur’s love life~."
"Really? Tell me! Who is it? Who?" Zebra eagerly asked. Serval, with a serious expression, answered her.
"Apparently, it’s a customer from the lounge. For a serious sensei like him to fall in love, it must be a pretty important VIP."
"What? Lemur’s in a serious relationship with a big spender?" Leopard, sitting diagonally across, blurted out in a loud voice.
"Big spender—does that mean an Alpha?"
"An Alpha who's also super rich," whispered Newt and Lynx to each other. Kazusa, now a little irritated, denied it sharply, "I told you, that’s not it!"
"Lemur, while it’s not forbidden to fall in love with a customer, you’re still an apprentice. You should take it easy," Hawk warned him with a serious expression at the end of this game of telephone. Kazusa silently looked up at the ceiling, exasperated. The younger cast members always seemed to gather around and chat about romance whenever they had a chance. He understood it was just that time of life for them, but he really wished they wouldn’t use him as a source of entertainment.
In the corner of Kazusa’s vision, he noticed a slouched boy entering the community floor. He wore large black-rimmed glasses, too big for his small face, and had a hood pulled over his head, making it hard to see his expression. His oversized black outfit, black shoes, headphones hanging around his neck, and even the mug he carried were all black. Living up to his code name ‘Crow’, the boy was dressed entirely in black. Kazusa called out to him.
"Zebra baked a chiffon cake. Why don't you have some?"
Crow didn’t react. Without even glancing Kazusa’s way, he circled around the large table in silence and plopped down cross-legged on a couch in the corner of the room. He put his headphones on, closed his eyes, and completely shut out the outside world.
Crow's cold shoulder wasn’t new. Kazusa had tried talking to him several times when they had shifts together, but Crow had ignored him every single time. He had never even heard Crow's voice.
"It’s pointless talking to him. He’s always like that, sitting alone and not talking to anyone. Even in the lounge, he just sits there in silence. Does he even think that counts as service?" Serval, who was normally upbeat, sounded irritated for once.
"Of course he doesn’t get any regular customers. So he’s stuck as an assistant, making zero income," Zebra added with a shrug.
"He has zero ambition too. I mean, you don’t get the sense that he’s trying to contribute to sales in any way. What is he even doing here?" Serval spat, furrowing his brow.
For someone like Serval, who was working hard to be one of the top two in sales, the presence of a colleague who showed no motivation was bound to be frustrating.
"Well, as long as he's here, his food, shelter, and basic needs are covered. He just has to sit in a seat for a few hours a day and then retreat back into his own world," Zebra remarked sharply.
Kazusa understood why someone like Zebra, who was striving forward with her dreams, might be frustrated with Crow, who seemed closed off from the world. But with age, Kazusa had learned that not everyone could always be so positive and driven. People discover what they want to do at different stages in life, and not everyone can keep up the same pace.
Zero, of course, had probably taken all that into account and was watching over Crow with the intention of allowing him the time to grow, seeing things over a long span.
"You don't need to deal with him anymore, Sensei. He's just going to ignore you anyway."
Kazusa didn't respond clearly to Serval's advice, only murmuring "Hmm..." as he stuffed the remaining chiffon cake into his mouth. Just then, a lively conversation echoed from the kitchen.
(It’s the Lycaon group!)
Serval must have noticed Kazusa tense up instinctively because he asked, "Are you okay?" Kazusa nodded quietly. Now that he was distancing himself from Zero, as long as he didn’t actively get involved, there shouldn’t be any trouble.
Soon, the ‘Slum Gang’ appeared in the common area floor: Lycaon with his silver two-block haircut, Jackal with his multi-colored cornrows, and Fossa with his soft Mohawk and nose piercing.
"What’s everyone doing here?" Jackal asked suspiciously. It was rare for this many people to gather during the day, so his curiosity was understandable.
"Hawk and I were teaching some volunteers who wanted to study," Kazusa explained, to which Jackal and Fossa gave a half-hearted "Hmm" in response. Lycaon didn’t seem interested and looked away.
"I was learning maths, and Lemur's lesson was really easy to understand," Zebra praised. She turned to Kazusa, seeking agreement with a "Right?" which left him a little flustered.
"I’m not sure about my teaching, but... I do know Zebra’s chiffon cake is really delicious."
"Huh..."
Though Jackal and Fossa pretended not to care, it was obvious they were quite interested. When they weren’t around Lycaon, Jackal and Fossa usually interacted normally with the other cast members. Kazusa had spoken to them individually and found that while they tended to act tough in groups, they were actually simple, well-meaning young men.
Especially Jackal, whose face clearly said; Wow, I really want some cake.
It was common knowledge that Jackal had a crush on Zebra, though he was the only one who thought no one had noticed. Whether Zebra was aware of his feelings or not was still unknown.
"Well... there’s still some cake left. You guys are welcome to have some too, if you want," Kazusa found himself saying, unable to ignore Jackal's envious expression. After all, it wasn’t every day you got to eat a cake baked by the girl you liked.
"Zebra, is that okay?"
"I baked it to thank Lemur for teaching me, so if he says it's fine, then I'm fine with it," Zebra replied. Jackal's face lit up immediately. After exchanging glances with Fossa, he answered, "Well, I guess... I don’t mind."
"Alright, then go grab some chairs from the counter," Hawk instructed. Jackal and Fossa obediently brought over chairs and sat down eagerly.
Though Kazusa’s invitation had included Lycaon, he didn’t move. He stood rigidly facing the wall. After some hesitation, Kazusa decided to speak to his stubborn back.
