"That's it? That's all you have to say?" Serval groaned.

Serval let out a voice that sounded like disappointment. Kazusa’s heart skipped a beat when Zero, who had shifted his gaze away from the dejected Serval, met his eyes.

Even just a word... He wanted Zero to talk to him. Just one word would be enough...

Kazusa unconsciously pleaded with his eyes—just a second later.

"Could you move out of the way?"

"......"

The icy tone from above made Kazusa’s body temperature plummet in an instant.

He stood there, frozen in shock, unable to move. Zero glanced down at him with a cold expression, then sighed as if giving up, and stepped around him to walk past.

"I’m starting the meeting."

Zero’s voice called out to the other cast members from behind. Kazusa clenched his pale hands tightly.

This was the way he had wanted.

Zero was merely fulfilling it exactly as Kazusa had asked.

He shouldn’t be too shocked by this.

He had no right to feel hurt.

***

Knock, knock. Knock, knock.

(Is someone knocking at the door?)

Ding-dong. Ding-dong.

(Now the doorbell?)

"…Ugh…"

Kazusa stirred from the depths of his sleep, frowning as he turned over.

In the three weeks since he had come here, the pressure of the unfamiliar work, the stress of human relationships—all of it had unknowingly built up. Last night, he had returned to his room after his shift, his steps unsteady and uncertain.

Feeling like he had reached his physical limit, he collapsed onto the bed without even showering, but sleep wouldn’t come.

―――Hey, owner, don’t you think our Sensei looks like a totally different person with just a little work?

―――Yeah, he does.

That was Zero’s indifferent response.

―――Could you move out of the way?

Zero’s ice-cold voice replayed endlessly in his head… He couldn’t sleep.

There was no way Zero would ever be pleasantly surprised by his appearance.

...How foolish.

On top of that, Kazusa had been so shocked by Zero’s behaviour that he had blatantly started avoiding him afterward.

...What an idiot.

Disgusted with his own childishness, all Kazusa could do was sigh.

At this rate, he wouldn’t be able to recover his strength. The more he worried about it, the harder it became to fall asleep, tossing and turning countless times. Finally, just as the sky started to lighten and the birds began to chirp, he slipped into unconsciousness.

Ding-dong. Ding-dong. Ding-dong.

(Damn it… How persistent…)

He had finally managed to fall asleep, but if he got up now, he knew he wouldn’t be able to fall asleep again.

He needed to sleep in order to recover his strength. (Please, just let me sleep. Please…)

Kazusa squeezed his eyes shut and turned toward the wall, burrowing deeper under the covers—when suddenly, the blanket was yanked off in one swift motion.

"...!"

(Huh? What’s happening?)

Still only half awake, Kazusa turned slightly, trying to understand what had just happened. As he lay on his back, a pair of heterochromatic eyes came into view.

He blinked up in a daze at the beautiful face looking down at him from above.

"Huh?... Zero? Wait… am I dreaming?"

"Please, wake up."

Zero's serious expression and the way he shook Kazusa's shoulder finally made him realise that this wasn’t a dream. A sharp jolt of electricity ran through him from where Zero’s hand touched his shoulder.

Kazusa sat up abruptly, hurriedly grabbing his glasses from the bedside and putting them on. With his corrected vision, he looked up at Zero, who stood next to the bed. His face was close.

This wasn’t a dream or a hallucination—it was the real Zero.

"Sorry for disturbing your sleep. I rang the intercom, but there was no response. So I used the spare key."

Hearing Zero explain why he was standing there, Kazusa, still feeling somewhat light-headed, replied, "No, I’m the one who should apologise. ...What’s the matter?"

"I got a message from Gazelle saying something’s wrong with Misa."

In an instant, a switch flipped. Kazusa’s doctor mode, which had been dormant, awakened, and he stood up from the bed. He quickly threw a cardigan over his pyjamas.

"Let’s go."

He grabbed the first-aid kit that was always kept by the front door, slipped on his sandals without socks, and rushed out. Zero, following closely, joined him in the elevator.

Descending to the second floor, they opened the door to room 201. As soon as it opened, the sound of laboured coughing—hack, hack—echoed through the air.

(This cough...)

"Sensei! Owner!"

Gazelle, who was holding Misa, cried out in a panic when he saw Kazusa and Zero rush in. Kazusa, without a word, approached them, knelt down on the floor, and took Misa from Gazelle.

"Wheeze... wheeze... hack, hack"

Tears streamed down Misa’s face as she coughed, her face flushed red. Kazusa pried her mouth open with his fingers and shone a penlight inside. There was no visible obstruction, but it was likely something was stuck deeper in her throat.

"She was fine when she woke up this morning. But when I left the room for a moment to go to the kitchen, I came back, and she was already like this..."

Gazelle’s voice wavered as he explained, almost in tears himself. Kazusa cut him off with a question, "Does Misa have asthma?"

"No, she doesn’t."

Based on that, Kazusa made his diagnosis: "It’s most likely choking."

"Choking?"

"There’s a chance something is stuck at the entrance of her windpipe. I’m going to try and make her cough it up."

Without wasting a second, Kazusa flipped Misa over. He positioned her face-down on his thigh, her head lower than her chest. He applied light pressure to her diaphragm with his leg, then carefully began to strike between her shoulder blades with the heel of his hand.

Thump, thump, thump, thump, THUMP.

"Hack!"

On the fifth strike, Misa coughed something up. It clattered to the floor. Zero, who had been watching closely, quickly picked it up.

"It’s a button."

"That’s it! It’s the button from her favourite stuffed rabbit!" Gazelle, who had also been watching anxiously, shouted in relief.
