Stepping out of the elevator, he saw a crowd gathered in front of the black door on the first floor. Serval, Giraffe, Zebra, Fossa, Jackal, Crow, Newt, Leopard, and Lynx were all there—everyone except the Gazelle with a child and the departed Lycaon.

And standing with their backs to the black door, facing the residents, were four police officers.

(Police officers?)

Kazusa’s heart thumped uneasily.

“Ah, Sensei!”

Noticing Kazusa, Serval pushed through the crowd to approach him. His face looked tense.

“What’s going on?”

“Your customer brought policemen here. He’s talking with the Owner and Hawk in the community floor right now. I got shut out.”

“Inukai-san brought policemen…?”

Since Inukai was an Alpha, he might have connections in the local police.

Realising the weight of the consequences of angering an Alpha, Kazusa paled.

Bringing police here went beyond a simple complaint.

(This is… my fault.)

If only he’d been more cautious in dealing with Inukai…

―――He seemed to be persistently inviting you out after that. Are you sure you’re okay with that?

At the time, Zero might have sensed the possibility of trouble. Though he had extended a hand to help, Kazusa had turned him down.

He’d overestimated his ability to handle things alone.

With Lycaon, too, Kazusa had sensed the frustration toward him but had neglected proper care in the midst of his busyness, leaving it unaddressed.

This was the result…

As he bit his lip, the black door opened with a whir.

“Ah, they’re coming out!”

Serval shouted, and the four police officers split into two lines. First out was Inukai, looking smug. Next was a tough-looking man in a double-breasted suit, likely the detective, his large frame imposing. Then, sandwiched by burly men, was Zero, followed by Hawk. Last in line was a young man with a hard glare.

(Zero…)

This looked like one of those scenes on the news where suspects were escorted to the police station.

The residents seemed to think the same and murmured anxiously.

“Owner!”

Serval’s voice was like a scream.

“Where are you taking them?!”

“Owner! Hawk!”

The residents tried to surge toward Zero, but the police stepped in to block them.

Then Zero stopped, his clear voice cutting through. “Everyone, calm down.”

“We’re going to the police station to clear our names. Hawk and I will undergo questioning.”

After explaining to the residents, he looked around at their worried faces and spoke reassuringly. “Don’t worry. We’ll be back soon.”

Zero, in his deep voice, tried to comfort everyone before he looked over at Kazusa, and their eyes met.

“Ze…-”

Kazusa’s attempt to call out to him was cut short by a shout from the young officer at the back.

“Don’t stop walking!”

“Hurry it up!”

“Hey, don’t be rough with him.”

Zero shot a sharp glare at the young officer who had shoved Hawk. The officer flinched.

“What are you dawdling for? Move!” The detective in the double-breasted suit shouted at his subordinate in a rough voice.

“Y-yes, sir! All right, keep moving!”

Prompted, Zero walked forward in silence, with Hawk following behind him. Ahead of them, three police cars were lined up, blocking the narrow road. Just as he was about to get into the lead vehicle, Inukai glanced back. Seeing Kazusa’s pale face, he smirked with satisfaction and disappeared into the car.

Zero and Hawk were forced into the back seat of the second car, with the detectives pushing them inside. The uniformed police officer who had been intimidating the residents of ‘RARE’ entered the last car in the convoy.

The doors closed, and the police cars drove away.

“Owner!”

“Hawk!”

Giraffe and Zebra cried out, and everyone left behind ran out onto the street. Kazusa also stumbled out with them, watching in stunned silence as the convoy of police cars, with Zero and Hawk inside, disappeared down the road.

“Sensei… what should we do?”

A trembling voice came from nearby. When he turned, Kazusa saw Serval’s pale face.

“They’re going to treat the Owner and Hawk horribly. Those guys will do whatever it takes to make them talk.” It was Fossa, a slum-born resident, who spat those words with bitterness.

“They say it’s questioning, but they’re not going to listen properly anyway.” Jackal, another from the slums, scowled and cursed.

“That smug, moustached guy got banned from here. So he’s getting his revenge by using the police to capture the Owner. Damn Alpha!” Serval cursed Inukai, unable to hide his frustration.

(…Zero.)

From the outside, Zero appeared as a resident of Deep Downtown, a man with foreign blood, and a mysterious figure who ran a shelter for stray Omegas.

To the police, he was an unknown, suspicious character.

With Inukai’s influence, there was a high chance they’d start the interrogation assuming Zero was guilty.

There was no way he’d be treated fairly…

The ominous word ‘torture’ suddenly crossed Kazusa’s mind.

If Zero and Hawk suffered violence because of him… just the thought made his legs tremble, and he felt he might collapse.

“What should we do… what can we do?”

With tears brimming, Zebra looked up at the sky, and Giraffe hugged him.

“It’ll be okay. Didn’t the Owner say they’d come back soon?”

“But… what if they don’t?”

“What are you saying! The Owner and Hawk didn’t do anything wrong. They’re innocent.”

“But you know those TV shows—they force people to confess with threats and violence.”

“Does that mean they could be put in jail?”

“Not just jail—if they lose in court, they might end up in an actual prison.”

“Oh no! If that happens, what’ll we do?”

“Will we all just be scattered about… That can’t happen, right?”

“No! I don’t want that!”

With the sudden loss of both Zero and Hawk—their emotional anchors—the younger residents were panicking.

(This isn’t the time to fall apart.)

Kazusa, as one of the older residents, realised he had to support everyone. He called out, “Everyone, please calm down.” Eighteen eyes turned to him all at once. Under their hopeful gazes, he swallowed nervously.

In a situation like this, what would Zero do?

(Zero would surely say…)

“I’ll find a way.”

He rallied himself and declared it, and everyone seemed to sigh with relief.

“Please, Lemur!”

“Help the Owner!”

With Zebra and Giraffe clinging to him, Kazusa wrapped an arm around each of their shoulders.

“All right… leave it to me.”

He had promised to do something, but he had no police connections and didn’t even know which station they’d been taken to. Downtown was divided into east, west, south, and north, each with its own police station.

Still, all Kazusa could do was to check each police station, one by one. Once he found the station where Zero and Hawk were detained, he’d have to negotiate for their release.

(I’ve been saved by Zero so many times. Now it’s my turn to save him.)

“I’ll… find a way,” he murmured, his gaze focused with determination. It was as if he was convincing himself more than anyone else.

Suddenly, a husky voice spoke from the side.
