The entrance revealed an interior with off-white plaster walls, a tiled floor, and a simple wooden shoe cabinet. The hallway had real wooden flooring. Zero walked straight down it without taking off his shoes.

(Shoes on?)

Startled, Kazusa could only follow Zero’s lead and step inside with his sneakers still on. As Zero opened the inner door, Kazusa peeked over his shoulder into the room.

His first impression was, "It’s bright." Being a corner room, one side had large sliding glass doors leading to a balcony, and another wall had a large waist-high window, allowing plenty of natural light to flood in.

In one corner of the main room, which was around fifteen tatami mats in size, there was a built-in kitchen. Two doors likely led to the bathroom and toilet. The layout was similar to a typical studio apartment for a single person. But to Kazusa’s surprise, it was much cleaner than he had imagined based on the building's exterior, perhaps recently renovated. The entire space had a minimalist design—off-white walls and ceilings, wooden floors continuing from the hallway, and simple built-in shelves and lighting that gave the room a calm, understated feel. While inside this room, it was easy to forget they were in the rough area of Deep Downtown.

Kazusa’s belongings had already been delivered. About ten cardboard boxes were stacked neatly in a corner.

Satisfied with the space that would serve as the foundation for his new life, Kazusa said, his voice bouncing with excitement, "It’s clean, bright, and a really nice room!"

“Glad you like it,” Zero responded.

“Yes, I do.”

With a slightly pleased expression, Zero added, “I chose a room with as much sunlight as possible.”

Hearing that, Kazusa thought that maybe Zero had been considerate, making sure he wouldn’t fall into dark thoughts again.

It’s said that exposure to sunlight increases serotonin levels, stabilising one’s mood.

If that was true… Zero might not be such a bad person after all, if he had gone to such lengths for someone who wasn’t even a friend or close acquaintance.

Kazusa quietly gazed at Zero’s profile as he stood by the window.

When they had been intimate, Zero had exuded a dangerous allure, like a nocturnal beast glowing in the moonlight. But now, bathed in sunlight, he seemed almost divine.

(He looks like Apollo…)

As Kazusa stared, lost in thought. Zero suddenly turned toward him, their eyes meeting.

"…!"

Kazusa quickly averted his gaze, feeling flustered. Clearing his throat awkwardly, he began, "Um…"

"Thank you very much. Not only did you help move my things, but you even got everything set up. I really appreciate it."

Kazusa finally voiced his gratitude, bowing his head.

Despite having initially resisted out of pride, claiming he didn’t need anyone’s pity, he had ended up relying on Zero for everything.

It had been a somewhat forceful process. But without Zero’s assertiveness and determination, he would never have found such a great place in such a short time.

"Also… we haven’t discussed the rent yet," Kazusa added, voicing a new concern that had arisen as he inspected the room. It was something he should have asked about earlier.

It’s common knowledge that higher floors in rental buildings tend to be more expensive. This room was on the sixth floor, a corner unit, and it looked recently renovated. Plus, the location was in the heart of the Deep Downtown. If the rent exceeded what he had budgeted for, he might struggle to afford it with his savings.

After all this, the possibility of having to move out again soon made him anxious.

“So, how much is the rent per month?”

“Per month?”

“The rent for this room. How much should I pay?”

At Kazusa’s question, Zero’s expression darkened for some reason.

“You don’t need to pay rent,” Zero said flatly, with a hint of annoyance in his voice.

Kazusa was taken aback, both by the unexpected response and by Zero’s apparent frustration. He couldn’t understand why Zero was getting upset over this conversation. With a confused expression, he retorted, “But that wouldn’t be right.”

“There must be a landlord for this place,” he added.

Zero gave him a look as if to say, ‘What are you talking about?’ before stating, "I’m the owner."

“...Huh?”

Kazusa’s eyes widened, and he was left speechless for a few seconds before blurting out, “Th-The owner of this room?”

“This room, yes. But also the entire building—it’s mine. I told you, you don’t need to pay rent,” Zero said firmly.

“The owner of the building?!” Kazusa’s voice cracked.

He had assumed that Zero, who seemed at ease handling expensive cars, was financially well off. But he never imagined he owned an entire building. Even in Deep Downtown, owning a building in the bustling heart of Central City wasn’t something just anyone could do.

(Who… is he, really?)

Kazusa stared at Zero, who furrowed his eyebrows, looking annoyed. “I told you I’d take care of you, didn’t I?” Zero pressed.

“Well, yes. You did…”

It was true. Zero had indeed said, “If you’ve got nowhere to live, why don’t you stay with me? I’ve got a spare room. You can move in right away.” But Kazusa had assumed Zero meant an apartment or a room in a building he happened to live in, not one he owned.

“Um…” Kazusa began, unable to hold back his curiosity. “I’m sorry if this is too personal, but where do you get that kind of income?”

“Why do you want to know?” Zero responded, looking puzzled.

Flustered, Kazusa hesitated. “I mean, if you don’t want to talk about it, that’s fine. I was just impressed at how successful you are at such a young age.”

“I’m not hiding anything.”

“S-Sorry…”

Kazusa blushed at his own bluntness. But Zero didn’t press him further and casually explained his income source.

“My main income comes from stock trading. The money I used to buy the building was from investments. Besides investment profits, I also have a steady income from the lounge in the basement.”

So, it wasn’t inherited wealth but money he had earned himself.

(A stock trader and lounge owner… That explains a lot.)

The nickname ‘King of the Night’ seemed fitting after all.

Running a lounge requires experience in the service industry. Kazusa guessed Zero had probably worked as a host or in a similar role himself. His exceptional looks and the refined grace in his movements made that easy to believe.

“I bought this building three years ago because I wanted to create a sanctuary for Stray Omegas.”

Seizing the opportunity, Zero continued, as if wanting to explain everything in one go.

“A sanctuary for Stray Omegas?”

The conversation had taken an unexpected turn. Kazusa was momentarily caught off guard.

“We call this place ‘RARE.’ It’s a haven for strays.”

*GLOSSARY:

  • In Japan, rooms are traditionally measured by the number of tatami mats because tatami has long been a standard flooring material in Japanese homes. A tatami mat has a standardised size, approximately 0.9 metres by 1.8 metres (varying slightly by region), making it a practical unit of measurement for room dimensions. This method dates back to the Edo period (1603–1868), when rooms were often designed around the size and layout of tatami mats. Since tatami mats were a key part of Japanese architecture and culture, counting rooms by the number of mats became a cultural norm, which persists even today. It’s a convenient and visual way to describe the size of a room, as the number of tatami mats gives a direct sense of the space’s layout and proportions. For example, a ‘6-tatami’ room gives an immediate idea of the room's size and function.

“That’s right. So you don’t need to speak to me so formally.”

It seemed that Zero had no intention of using formal speech just because Kazusa was older, either.

However, even knowing that Zero was younger, Kazusa couldn’t bring himself to speak casually. Closing the gap between them too much would be problematic.

“...I’m not used to speaking informally... So if you don’t mind, I’d like to continue as I am.”

“Do whatever you like.”

Zero shrugged casually, brushing it off with ease. His nonchalant gesture somehow came across as irritatingly perfect.

“We’re almost there.”

Just as Kazusa found himself absentmindedly admiring Zero’s movie-star-like profile, Zero informed him that they were nearing their destination, causing Kazusa to exclaim, “Already?”

“It’s only been about fifteen minutes.”

“We’re still in Downtown, after all.”

“…”

However, even though they were still technically in the same downtown area, this part was much closer to the slums, in what locals referred to as ‘Deep Downtown’. The scenery outside the car window had changed before Kazusa realised it.

There were far fewer houses, parks, and shopping districts, and the streets had narrowed, with buildings and commercial facilities dominating the view. Unlike the clean, well-known chains and stylish storefronts of Midtown, here, most of the businesses were either old and grimy or painted in garish colours. They were clearly independent shops. Many of the buildings were either greasy, had cracked display windows, or were covered in graffiti, giving off a neglected vibe. Crumbling walls of mixed-use buildings, pothole-riddled asphalt, and battered cars abandoned on the streets completed the rundown appearance.

This area had many nightlife establishments that opened in the evening. So during the daytime, the whole place seemed to be ‘sleeping’. In fact, there were hardly any people on the streets. What stood out most were the towering piles of uncollected garbage bags.

“Have you been around here before?”

When Zero asked, Kazusa replied quietly, “...No, hardly ever.”

At night, even a man would need courage to walk alone in this area. Kazusa had passed through here once, out of necessity, after 10 PM. But the aggressive solicitors from adult entertainment and hostess clubs had swarmed him, and it had taken a great deal of effort to shake them off. Ever since then, he had developed a strong aversion to the area and had avoided coming here whenever possible.

The city that never sleeps—Deep Downtown—was a place far removed from the likes of someone like Kazusa, who had no interest in nightlife.

And yet—

(I can't believe that... I'll be living here.)

The unexpected turn of events made him clench his hands tightly on his lap.

Even though he didn’t like the area, there was no way to escape. His furniture and belongings had already been moved in.

Zero glanced at Kazusa, who had suddenly fallen silent, and said, "It’s not exactly a safe area. But it’s not as bad as it looks from the outside. It’s one of those places where you get used to it."

“Haah…”

“We’re here.”

Zero pointed ahead at a seven-story building that looked like it had seen better days.

Zero parked the car in one of the four available parking spaces next to the building.

Following Zero’s lead, Kazusa unfastened his seatbelt. Slinging his shoulder bag across his body, he got out of the car. Zero, who had already exited, locked the car with a remote button.

Kazusa followed behind Zero, who walked ahead with long strides into the building. But before entering the entrance, Kazusa paused to take in his surroundings.

There was no nameplate or sign indicating the building’s name. It was an anonymous building. The exposed concrete exterior was blackened in places, and Kazusa estimated it was about thirty years old. Still, it didn’t look neglected, perhaps because it had been well-maintained. The street in front of the building was narrow but clean and free of trash, unlike the streets he had seen from the car window earlier. Everything appeared to be better managed here.

Looking up, Kazusa saw square windows neatly aligned. Curtains or blinds covered most of them, and there was little sign of life. It didn’t seem like a residential building such as an apartment or condominium, but neither did it look like it housed stores. If it had businesses, there would usually be visible signs or a system indicating their presence. It looked like a mixed-use building with several companies or offices.

Just as Kazusa finished surveying the building, his eyes met Zero’s, who was waiting by the elevator.

“S-Sorry,” Kazusa stammered, quickly stepping into the glass-doored entrance and walking straight to the elevator. As he reached the elevator, he noticed a black door to the left. This seemed to be the entrance to the first floor. But from the outside, it was impossible to see inside. Behind him, there was a staircase leading down to the basement. But he didn’t see any stairs going up.

Zero pressed the elevator button, and when the doors opened, both of them stepped inside. As they turned to face forward, Kazusa saw buttons labelled ‘B2’, ‘B1’, ‘1’, ‘2’, ‘3’, ‘4’, ‘5’, ‘6’, ‘7’, and ‘R’.

Zero pulled a card out of the pocket of his long black coat and inserted it into the slot beneath the ‘B2’ button, then pressed ‘6’. The elevator jerked slightly as it began to ascend.

“There’s a basement?”

“The first and second basement levels are used as businesses.”

“Businesses? So, they’re stores?”

Kazusa was surprised since there hadn’t been any signs out front.

“A members-only lounge.”

“Members-only…”

That made sense—if the business didn’t accept walk-in customers, there would be no need for signage. It was probably one of those hidden, exclusive lounges that only those in the know could access.

While Kazusa was still processing this, they arrived on the sixth floor, and the doors opened. Zero held the sliding door open with his hand, gesturing for Kazusa to go first. He did it so smoothly, with such practised ease, that it almost felt irritatingly perfect.

“Thank you,” Kazusa said, giving a slight nod and stepping out onto the sixth floor. Directly in front of him were three black doors—one to the right, one straight ahead, and one to the left.

Zero stopped in front of the door on the left. There was an intercom next to the black door, and above it, a small plaque with the room number ‘601’. Zero pulled a keyring from his coat pocket and selected a key with a colourful cap, inserting it into the lock. After unlocking the door, he grasped the handle and pulled it open.

*Translator’s Note: It’s kinda hard to depict how formal and informal language works in English. I think those who translate from Korean language would also understand. Japan and Korea are very hierarchical countries. Is that what it’s called? Yeah. Something like that. But just know that in Japanese, there’s an informal way of speaking (usually among friends or close acquaintances) and then the formal speech (among strangers or those older or your superiors). But since this is an English translation, you won’t get to see much of the difference. Nevermind though, as long as this gets across to you. -K

As soon as Kazusa started thinking about it, a heavy feeling settled in his stomach. He knew it would shock them. His younger brother, still a high school student, might be fine. But his parents would take a huge blow. For his ordinary Beta parents in the countryside, their eldest son suddenly coming out as an Omega would be nothing short of a lightning strike on a clear day. There was a high chance they wouldn’t be able to process the reality and might even end up bedridden.

It might be best to keep quiet for the time being.

If he were to tell them, it should be after securing a new job, at least.

Once he had some direction in life, perhaps they would find it easier to accept—so he hoped.

As he mulled over these gloomy thoughts with a downcast expression, a black two-seater car drove past the outer gate and smoothly pulled into the parking lot. The car came to a stop right in front of Kazusa, and the driver's side window rolled down silently.

“Did I keep you waiting?”

Startled by the man’s voice, Kazusa let out a surprised “Eh?”

“Zero?”

When they had been moving his belongings earlier, Zero had said, “After I drop off your stuff at the new place, I’ll come back to pick you up. So wait for me at the dorm parking lot.” Kazusa had been waiting, assuming Zero would return in the small rental truck. The two-seater was unexpected. But Zero must have already returned the rental after finishing the move.

Zero opened the passenger-side door and jerked his chin, signalling for Kazusa to get in. Hesitating for a moment, Kazusa walked around to the other side and got into the passenger seat. He slid his body into the leather seat and looked around the interior.

The exterior looked sleek and stylish. The interior was also decked out in full leather, offering an incredibly comfortable seating experience. Even though Kazusa wasn’t knowledgeable about cars due to being a paper driver, he could tell this was a luxury vehicle. Even senior executives at the hospital couldn’t easily own such a high-end sports car.

While Kazusa felt restless in such a luxurious setting, Zero seemed completely at ease behind the wheel of the fancy sports car. It was as if he belonged there. It was, in a way, a perfect fit.

(Just who is this guy?)

The question finally surfaced, albeit late. Up until now, Kazusa had assumed things based on Zero’s flashy appearance and the fact that he lived downtown, imagining him to be something like the ‘King of the Night’ or ‘Legendary Host’.

But now, thinking more calmly, Kazusa realised he knew very little about Zero. The fact that they had slept together made it feel like he knew him better than he actually did. But in reality, he barely knew anything.

Kazusa didn’t know Zero’s age, occupation, background, or even his gender category.

Even Zero’s name was probably not his real one.

What he did know was that Zero always dressed in black, had a lot of connections with Stray Omegas, and didn’t seem to have any financial worries.

Kazusa started to feel uneasy about entrusting his life to someone he knew so little about.

He had always been cautious and overly careful, the type to check the sturdiness of a bridge so much that he’d end up breaking it...

“Seatbelt.”

A voice from beside him broke his train of thought.

“Huh?”

“Put on your seatbelt.”

“Oh… right.”

Kazusa unbuckled his shoulder bag and clicked his seatbelt into place just as Zero smoothly started the car. With a precise, effortless steering motion, Zero made a perfect U-turn and drove out onto the road.

Kazusa mentally added new information to his ‘Zero folder’: He’s an excellent driver.

(Now that I think about it... I don’t even know where I’m going.)

As the car moved, Kazusa gazed out the window at the familiar scenery and realised that he had no idea where his new home was. He had been so preoccupied with everything that needed to be done that he hadn’t even thought to ask.

But now, it didn’t seem necessary to ask. He would find out soon enough, and wherever it was, he had no other place to go. So he would just have to accept it.

With a resigned determination, Kazusa braced himself and quietly watched the scenery pass by. But the growing silence started to feel oppressive. He glanced over at Zero, who was focused on the road ahead, calmly steering. Though Zero had been talkative when convincing Kazusa earlier, he didn’t seem like the type to make idle chatter.

“…”

The confined space of the car made Kazusa feel suffocated. Whether it was Zero’s body scent or the cologne he wore, the faint sweetness that drifted from him triggered Kazusa’s brain to replay memories of the intimate time they had spent together.

(Idiot. Stop thinking about it.)

Kazusa mentally pressed the stop button, hurriedly halting the playback in his head.

It had been a complete accident. And from Zero’s perspective, he had just been dragged into it, like an unintended bystander. Unlike Kazusa, for whom it had been his first experience, for Zero, it was probably just one of many casual encounters. While it had been a life-altering event for Kazusa, for Zero, it was likely nothing noteworthy.

Yes—that’s why, despite what happened, Zero was acting distant. Back then, he had been so passionate, saying things like, “I’ll take care of you” and “I’ll protect you”. But yesterday and today, he was oddly businesslike... And he seemed to be keeping a bit of a distance too.

(No, no.)

Kazusa shook his head slightly in secret.

That was fine. It had to be that way, or things would get complicated.

Since he had decided to rely on Zero for a while, getting too conscious of him would make things unbearable. They both should just pretend it never happened.

For the past two days, every time the memory threatened to resurface, Kazusa had mentally chanted, “Delete, delete,” to suppress it.

Yet here he was again, triggered by Zero’s scent, almost recalling that time…

The silence was the problem. If they kept quiet, Kazusa would start focusing on the man beside him. Thinking this, Kazusa decided to break the silence.

“Um… may I ask your age?”

“My age? I’m twenty-nine.”

“I see, twenty-nine… Wait, what!?”

He couldn’t help but raise his voice in surprise.

“So… you’re younger than me?”

(That’s unexpected.)

Zero exuded a commanding presence. His extraordinary aura, strange sense of assurance, and confidence in his actions—all had made Kazusa assume he was older.
